new mexico. up until the turn of the century, we are in the section of the gallery that represents native americans who lived here 1300 years ago, our first agriculturists in the valley and southern new mexico. this is a pit house, the home to that group of native americans. there would have been several of these pit houses in the village where people lived. they would have spent a lot of time in the pit house. they would have been there in the evening, nighttime, slept inside, inclement weather, maybe cooking. most of the time, people would have been outside, working in their fields, growing their crops -- squash and corn, the earliest crops we had here in the valley. this is our casa colonial. this is how the spanish people lived here in 1815. the spanish came about the 1500s. one came to new mexico. they were looking for riches, wandered into kansas, and came this way. they left behind remnants. one was a commercial crop. they were making wine. they were selling those grapes to make wine. that was popular. we do not grow -- we are back in the wine industry again. when you hear about california being -- all the wine from california -- in new mexico, we grew the first grapes bef

this fort was part of a system of forts through southern new mexico. this building here was where noncommissioned officers stayed. this would have been sergeants and corporals, and they would have been responsible for the crammed into be this space over here. so this is the barracks for the .nlisted men 1865,rt was started in and its first life was 13 years, 1865 to 1878. there were two companies here. a cavalry company, and an infantry company. there was room for 75 men in each barracks, so very tightly packed. they slept in bunk beds. the army had a standard for the amount of air that was supposed to circulate. this barracks did not meet that standard. if i had to guess, i would say it is in the mid to upper 90's right now and we are only in june. these men were wearing heavy, wool uniforms. i imagine it would have been brutal to have been stationed here. the heat would have been overwhelming. thatfort was not a fort engaged in a lot of battles with native americans. were, i believe, only three fatalities of people serving here that died in any sort

it's about the women of southern new mexico. this part of country has been called the wild west of new mexico. some of the most famous figures in wild west history come from around here. billy the kid, geronimo. the question of what were women doing. [laughter] was, to me, very interesting. there is a kind of iconic women of the wild west. she's either a prostitute or a farming lady with no teeth perhaps. or maybe an old indian woman, a calamity jane character spares. [laughter] and army wife who passes through with her husband in the calvary or whatever. i was contemplating all of this and looking at photographs in our collection and i ran across a photograph of a young woman holding a bachelor of science degree. this photo dated from 1895. i thought, okay, there's a whole another story going on here. we got into this project because of the photo collections that we have here. i think one of the most influential photographs was this of three men and they were three early professors who came to and as you in 1891. these men, this

southern new england. this morning there's not a lot of troublesome weather. phoenix had thunderstorms go through. southern new mexicoa lot of horrible stuff. central texas getting some of the rain. as far as the excessive heat goes, today will be one of the hottest days in boise history. all-time record high of 111. there's some indication it could get up there about 108 or so. from spokane to central portions of the rockies here, very hot, in montana too. here is how the forecast looks. there's 108 in boise. billings at 98. salt lake city at 100. the fire danger continues to be high throughout all of the west and the smoke is a huge issue for people trying to breathe with respiratory issues. in the east we're in the 80s and 90s from new england. 91 in d.c., and it is by far the best day you will get out of the next four or five. if you get lunch outdoors, i know it is hot, but try to enjoy it. into the weekend forecast, especially as we get intoed saturdintoed -- into saturday is when the rain will come up the eastern seaboa seaboard. i told them the graphic would work, but now it doesn't want. just the way it goes
