pennsylvania and the confederate army is forging and scavenging throughout these areas of southern pennsylvania. pennsylvania has largely been untouched at this point. as we can see from the map, one of the great ironies when these two forces meet up with one another, the southern of approach from the north and the north from the south. gettysburg was a very enterprising, bustling little town. and as far as 19th-century goes, it was fairly progressive compared to others. it had a college, a lutheran seminary and two female academies which was rare for a relatively rural community. what is really going forth is the road system that builds up here. 10 major roads that intersect. in the years leading up to the war, these roads brought prosperity and travelers. in july of 1863 instead of bringing prosperity, it will bring a war. up until this point, it seemed everything had been going well for gettysburg. they had new infrastructure and all of these educational aspects and the railroad come in. it is only one of two railways coming through gettysburg. the other one is more secretive. i am speaking

southern new jersey and pennsylvania were hit the hardest.nging mass transit to a standstill. officials say at least one person is dead. joining me now is nbc meteorologist bill karins. bill, what's happening today? >> today we're dealing with something similar. big wind damage and maybe isolated tornadoes. this time we're leaving the east coast and heading back to the midwest. from sioux falls to omaha, but especially this area is the best chance we'll see a squall. a line of thunderstorms yesterday rolling right through that region really strong winds later today. that's where the damage risk is really high. it does include chicago. 10:00, maybe 11:00 p.m. we could still watch these storms going to indiana. a major event for that area of the country. the other issue. they've had a ton of rain in this area of the country, including illinois, including iowa. we have flash flood warnings issued for this area. already seen heavy rain this morning, then we'll get thunderstorms later. our computer has estimated anywhere from 4 to 5 inches isolate

clint, as you look at the geography of this while there's some potential interest in southern new york, down by pennsylvaniae canadian border. >> thomas, all along i think from an investigators' point of view the smart money said these guys were right in that area. there was no cars missing, stolen hijacked. nothing broken into that we know of. nobody taken hostage. if these guys were on foot they had to be hunkered down in that immediate area. that's why law enforcement, you know, they have run different places covered the other leads, but they have kept a strong force right there in the area because everybody believed i think these guys had to be there. it was just a matter of time to find out where they were hiding. >> again, it gets all down to what the provisions are, what the long range goal was here. we know joyce mitchell agreed to be the getaway driver when they popped out of that manhole. she got cold feet on that. people tried to take account they would have a "b" plan but if this is accurate it doesn't seem that was the case and they were just going with gut on where to go and how to get there.

slight risk for severe weather across southeastern pennsylvania, marginal risk, in other words lower risk for severe weather through central southern new jersey and all of the state of delaware. regardless, it does appear as everyone is going to end up with the leading edge of this front with showers and locally stronger thunderstorms which primarily look to produce maybe some heavy downpours hail, certainly the potential here for very strong wind. we can't completely rule out tornado at least not completely. something we'll keep close watch on. heat just keeps oncoming back here, in fact, i jump ahead to the eyewitness weather seven day, take a look how the temperatures shape up. specially thursday friday, steamy hot dog days of summer style temperatures coming up here. so, it is interesting how cold front can cross through and just depending on the way the wind flow is, still just going to heat up from here. >> because last week so cold. now huge shift. >> hey, the 60s felt cold, right? >> it did. >> i'm with you t real did i. >> people with shore house this is week are happy they have them. that's for sure. >> totally back to th
