it will be downgraded a little bit before it reaches southern taiwan.ossibly making landfall before the weekend comes. already packing gusts of 200 kilometers per hour and the waves just around the center of the system is about ten meters high, and southwestern islands will start to see the highways. about seven meters already starting tonight. it is going to be a very stormy week, and a weekend ahead of you here in northern and southern taiwan. the drenching rainfall will be some staggering amounts. we'll be topping as much as 200 to even more in some locations. another storm system we have been monitoring is this over here. this is a tropical depression. it looks like it will be making landfall possibly in eastern vietnam. as a tropical depression status. this is already packing so much rainfall. about 300 millimeters or even more in some localized areas in vietnam having reported it. northern thailand already has seen 200 millimeters of rainfall from this system enhancing the southwestern monsoonal flow. more rain to be pounding the similar areas, so

. >>> typhoon usagi is battering northern philippines and southern taiwan. for more we turn to our meteorologist, robert speta. >> we continue to keep a close eye on this. a monster of a storm continuing to roll off to the west. i'll show you the visible satellite imagery just before sunset out here. just to the northeast of the philippines, you can see the eye really well developed. the defined spiral of circulation around the storm system, a clear indication of just how strong it is. people ahead of it do need to be taking it quite seriously. i know the philippines has issued the highest warning level for the islands right here in the luzon straight. about 15,000 people live there. farther to the north in taiwan, this photo taken by a colleague of mine that shows a lot of the traffic continuing to head towards the north. most of the people in these cars there on the northbound lane actually are tourists. it's an extended weekend in taiwan. it's a holiday weekend. so a lot of people headed down south for that extended weekend. but now starting to head north

last week, we talked about typhoon that was usagi which affected southern taiwan. the northern philippines and southern china with floods and this time we have a severe tropical storm first south of japan. this is causing lots of rain and strong winds too the ogasawa islands as we go into tomorrow. as a severe tropical storm, it's going to maintain its intensity, but the good news is that it's not going to make landfall in mainland swjapan. it's not going to produce lots of rain to mainland swra pjapan coastal areas will see high waves and rough seas as well and winds could be a little bit stronger. now, talking about the remnants of usagi, it's now located over southern china. it has weakened. however, it's still packing a lot of moisture to cause heavy rainfall. we're expecting more than 100 millimeters of rain to fall into the next 244 hours. in the line of thundershowers, from this area through the korean peninsula, up into the hokkaido area. now, across the americas, we're looking at lots of cool air coming in from the pacific. see dotted clouds right here. thi

the center of the storm is past south of taiwan but it's the bands toward the center that continue to put a lot of rain over the same area, specifically southern tip of taiwan here that heavy rain going over the same area because this is all rotating around the center and is hitting that same region. so torrential rain coming down now in taiwan. as far as the storm goes, it is not as defined as it was. so it's an indication it is not nearly as intention. shofar, wind still 110, 120 miles an hour. the latest information that comes in from the center is 125 miles an hour. it is still to the east of hong kong, but moving west/northwest at 13 miles an hour. category 3 now, but as it gets closer to land, it is expected to weaken and that will put it as a category 1 as it makes landfall overnight tonight, our time, by monday morning, local time. as far as our weather goes, heavy rain is flooding the southeast. we have flood warnings and watches in effect. this is all to go a big change with our national weather. i will look at that forecast coming up a little bit later. >> dave, thank you. >>> time is running out in washington. coming up, the house

southern chinese city expected to make land fall late sunday or early monday. the storm already left two people dead and two others missing when it passed through the philippines in taiwan. our tron joins us now from hong kong. we understand typhoon is head for the chinese central region. are businesses there preparing for this hit? >> reporter: well that's right. everybody here is taking all precautions as you would expect. this part of the world is used to typhoons but given the strength of this typhoon is a little nor than normal. people have been prepared. businesses are closed or will be closing as this typhoon bears down. people are being evacuated from low lying areas. other people are securing the path of buildings. >> now, rob, it was downgraded from a super tie to a super typy but does that make it any less dangerous? >> reporter: it is. it is slightly less if you like some of the winds have been slightly mitigated. what happened with these typhoons is they build up in the pacific and come racing in. the first countries to get hit are philippines and taiwan. they will feel the brunt of this typhoon. they do lose some of their power. what happens with this typh
