where the storm moves into the region it's impacted so many people, you talk about from southern indiana through texasseen the dots, those are freezing rain reports, so definitely huge impact is already out there, farther to the north, southern illinois, about a third of an inch, with you down to the south, you nailed it, you're talking about arkansas and tennessee, that's where we've already seen places like ft. smith, already had an inch of ice from freezing rain, and this threat still continues as this line makes its way closer and i always say this, over a half an inch of ice on the power lines makes them weigh 500 pounds. definitely an amazing fact, that means power lines are expected to come down, you're talking about a category 3 ice storm, it's a new thing, ice impact index the national weather service is trying this year. what that really tells you is of course what the impacts are. here in memphis they're thinking a cat 3, half inch to three-quarters of an inch, over a500-pound. north of arkansas they're expecting a catastrophic ice storm, category 5, they could be without power for weeks. >

right now all we're seeing is snow and rain here in western texas and southern mexico. as we head towards this time tomorrow, we'll see a lot more rain across texas. dallas, no more freezing rain and sleet and ice for you. more of a cold rain. also for oklahoma city. then we get towards kansas city to st. louis. we could see a little wintry mess there. maybe icing occurring there. chicago, snow showers start for you on friday. they linger into saturday. st. louis, you change over to snow showers. right here across the ohio valley, we're going to see a decent swath of snow. more snow for cleveland and detroit, toledo, pushing on towards pittsburgh and new york. boston, snow starts on saturday, gets at times heavy saturday night and lingers into sunday. depending on when our new coast tallow will develop, we could see perhaps just a change over to rain in new york city, maybe even in boston. we're still watching a decent swath of snow. and football on sunday, giants are at home. the steelers are at home. and cleveland is at home. yes, there will be snow falling again on th

as we move towards thursday, the concern is it pushes to the south and southern plains and into texastting up a potential freezing rain and icing event. you cannot drive in ice. you can deal with sleet and snow. ice is a problem even into friday. we'll watch this swath from southern missouri into little rock into dallas and oklahoma city. this is the area borderline of seeing perhaps a paralyzing ice event or heavy snow event as well. we'll find through the forecast as we go through the next several days. southern plains could be hit by a ice storm on top of the cold arctic air which pushes to the east coast as we head through this weekend. back to you. >> there are new details this afternoon about that deadly metro north derailment here in new york city. a senior law enforcement official tells nbc news that the engineer did not in fact tell investigators he had fallen asleep before the crash despite published reports to the contrary. he told them he zoned out and was unable to recall specifics about the moments leading up to the impact. tom costello has more on what we've learned. >>

texas, arkansas, oklahoma and other mid-southern states are being slammed by a storm. it's brought sleet, rain, ice. cars are slipping off the road. many of the affected areas are dealing with power outages because of all the freezing ice on power lines. and that storm is wreaking havoc on travel all around the united states right now. here at home in dc, we are under a yellow alert because some of that is coming this way. >> well, what we have is the initial front of this very, very large storm system. it's very complicated, but the first frontal boundary is moving through the dc metro right now. that's going to set the stage for that colder air, and if you drove into work and headed out for lunch or about to, you will feel the change. here's a one-hour doppler radar loop for you so you can see how this storm is progressing. we have the heavy rain moving through the beltway right now. you can see it outlined in the yellows and oranges. and just within the past five minutes, i saw some lightning strikes there on our radar and you can see them in the live view as well.

the next phase of extreme weather expected to be a major ice storm across the southern plains into the ohio valley. texase snow will fall in already hard-hit spots like denver. that's where ana cabrera is. good morning. >> reporter: it is incredibly cold here this morning. denver hit a record yesterday of negative 13 degrees below 0. and the temperatures are still falling, negative 14 degrees in denver right now. so dangerously cold. in colorado, of course, is not alone as this arctic air mass continues to spread.
