is all going not just in southlake but across the country.rd in that moment with that interview and the reason we included it and why we're planning it is because two years ago everyone in southlake when that first n-word video came out was willing to say racism is real, it exists, we're going to talk about it. even conservative council members and the mayor, they're all willing to address it head on. now after all that's happened, things have gotten so muddied and toxic that the superintendent of the schools, you could hear he wasn't sure if he should answer it. and he's someone who his job is controlled by the school board. they're the ones who hire him, and you heard there was calculating like am i allowed to say -- >> i sensed he believed racism does exist but that the toxicity stops him from saying it. >> we don't know. and i think that points to where this is going. now school officials, educators are watching their words, walking a tightrope afraid that they might say something that will upset angry parents. >> antonio, what do you tak

i am sure they loved it. >> reporter: evacuated southlake tahoe suddenly crawling with bears. video slows them running through empty streets and even opening someone's garage door. likely on the hunt for a bite to eat. >> two people's houses got broken into. one right by the high school. they broke the door down. and trashed it. >> reporter: travis parsons was just recently able to return home to southlake tahoe. he is hearing about bear break ins all over the community. even close to his house. >> my neighbor across the street they broke out his back window for a piece of a subsandwich, like the bread. >> reporter: we spoke to a man who owns 150 rental homes here. he says bears broke into 15 of those homes anwentaifor the refrigerator. he just found the damage. the department of wildli ing residents telling them not to give the bears food or water. some of them may have injuries from the wildfire but wildlife officers say to still leave them alone. they will find resources in unburned areas. >> i am not one to go up to bears. >> reporter: southlake tahoe is working quickly to

we will begin with katie nelson above southlake tahoe tonight, katie? >> reporter: ken, we are at the lodge on the california side of the mountain and tonight, snow-making machines are on blowing a fine watery mist across the mountain. >> reporter: crews from cal fire are putting together a strategy tonight to try to save heavenly from the caldor fire as the winds continue to push the flames east, straight towards the ski resort. >> we want the plan in place and everything built and in place where we can hold it here. >> reporter: firefighters made a plan for dozers to cut lines around the resort overnight. another key part of the strategy is the snow-making machines. >> it will help a lot. it is getting t is spreading water out. it is increasing the humidity level. it getting everything wet so if we have any spots in here it is able to slow it down to where we can get folks in it. >> reporter: at highway 88 at kirkwood, crews there are working tonight to try to protect the runs and infrastructure as the fire continues to move closer. fanned by the gust

they hear from some white residents in southlake that they feel the identity of southlake, the true texaseir students have faced at school, the comments, the exclusion that their kids complain about, i mean student after student has spoken to me and my co-host and they often use the word isolation. they go through the school district and they feel completely alone the entire time. they keep trying to tell these stories and they feel that their neighbors essentially have told them, you know, either get with the program, the culture of this town, or get out. >> what does this sort of backlash mean in terms of the way the school is dealing with issues now? have they managed to essentially curtail this proposed curriculum? >> well, the district's hands are tied at the moment because the restraining order is in place that bars any kind of work on a diversity and inclusion plan. i mean when you talk to administrators, even when you try to speak to them just on background they are afraid to talk to you about the details of the plan. >> yay. >> i had an exclusive interview with the superintendent

what were her thoughts on why southlake parents were so quick to react to that term?imberly crenshaw, one of the founding scholars of critical race theory and talked about what it was like to see decades of her work become so solarized and politicized and her reflection of her real message at the time was she saw this as a direct backlash to the movement for racial and social justice in the wake of george floyd's murder. what's fascinating that mike hix and my co-host and i trace in this podcast covering southlake is exactly what happens in this period in the summer of 2020 going into the fall back into the school year. as the community is grappling with conversations around george floyd and students of color coming forward and wanting to talk about their experiences. they start to see this diversity and inclusion plan that's been worked on for years and presented in town and it completely different racialized and politicized sense. it was fascinating to see crenshaw's reaction on how her work was altered and watching what transpired in this one local community in tex

it's called southlake. get started with you and our colleague. >> thanks for having me on, jacob. so right after george floyd's murder mike hickson because and i started to see a change in some communities around the u.s. where there was a backlash, communities had maybe tried to implement diversity and inclusion plans or talk about race in a different way this schools and then parents were responding in some communities negatively to this. when we first found out about southlake we got to work on this at the beginning of this year. it to us was a story about changing relationships in suburbs and it quickly became much larger than that we we realize that had southlake was one of the first communities to enter this culture war over critical race theory, how we talk about racism and systemic racism in history. they got their fight started in 2018. students in the district chanting the "n" word, parents tried to -- parents tried to implement a diversity and inclusion plan and it comes out in the months after g

joining me now, the cohost of the southlake podcast. is one of the best of the series. this episode takes you inside the -- how this fight in southlake is becoming national, what became a local fight over critical race theory over an attempt to bring a diversity and inclusion plan to the district right outside of dallas really turns into an election in town that's all about a referendum on the issues. what's important to know is that this diversity and inclusion plan presented in southlake, one of the ground zero fights for the entire national debate we see now, it was a plan to address not just racists but also anti-lgbtq bullying. and in the wake of george floyd's murder, conservative parents in town launch a backlash, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars and a lawsuit that is successful in putting the plan on an indefinite hold. and while all of that is going on this past spring, this past school year, a student in the district who we are calling m, because of potential for retaliation we are concealing the student's identity. an

tens of thousands of people are returning home to southlake tahoe. cars starting rolling in this afternoon. when cal fire lifted evacuation orders. nearly 22,000 residents were forced to leave, you remember last week, as the caldor fire raged towards the area. >> the idea of losing our history, that was more devastating than just losing my own home. >> it feels great, you know. and coming in slowly, a little at a time unlike leaving which was a traffic jam. >> firefighters say calmer winds and better weather conditions helped them keep the flames in check the last few days. they say no homes were lost on the eastern side. caldor fire burned 215,000 fires. at last check it destroyed 700 homes and 27,000 others are threatened. the fire is 44% contained. >>> crews are battling two more fires nonorthern california tonight. the bridge fire erupted under the forest hill bridge in auburn this afternoon. it quickly grew to 200 acres. crews evacuated the auburn state recreational area. the fire is 0% contained tonight. >> another new fire being called the law

police department around 5.19 on august 25th officers responded to reports of a shooting here at the southlake mobile home park upon arrival. they found one person suffering from a gunshot wound that victim was transported to the hospital. officers. also quickly identified a possible suspect in the case. he was spotted on surveillance video in a nearby backyard. you may have also stolen this car a short time later, the suspect was spotted by an officer walking along nearby auto mall parkway shirtless and carrying a baby stroller. >> this is dash cam video of the encounter when the officer confronted the suspect, the man began fumbling with the stroller and a shirt. a gun can be seen falling from the stroller. the man then falls to the ground picks up the weapon and points it at the officer. this is when the officer opened fire and fatally wounded the suspect based on the video freeman acting police chief believes the officer acted well, it's still under investigation. but as you can see in the video. >> i'm confident that the officers acted in accordance with the law in our policy. so. yeah, i

governor gavin newsome today talking about the fight against the caldor fire burning near lake tahoe in southlake the city remains under evacuation orders tonight reporter chip yost joins us now live with the latest on the fire in the containment efforts for myers in eldorado county, chip. >> yeah. good evening. and here on highway 50 right now in meyers. me give you an idea where out if you just go about 6 miles or so down highway running to the resort area of south lake tahoe where we had those evacuations yesterday right here where we're at in this little community of meyers. they had some spot fires from the counter fire. that is some members that landed here started some spot fires. thankfully, we haven't heard of any homes that got burned in this area. but the major action in the fires down this way. a little bit. just a few miles to the west here on highway 50 a little earlier there was fire on both sides of highway 50 down the road here to show you how the fire is moving. why there's concern about the community of meyers where we're and the communities farther east of south lake tahoe. lo

now leroy and his team hope this will keep the fire from southlake, and the tens of thousands of businesses and homes that surround it. >> it's in the back of your mind , but since you live in the mountains, you have to prepare for that. >> reporter: kpix 5 . >>> chief meteorologist paul heggen joins us right now looking at really the weekend shaping up. >>> it's a continuation of the better conditions ahead, specifically the lighter went. some good news is that it will remain pretty light again on friday. he can see the satellite indicated hotspots, and follow the trail as the fire grew into the tahoe basin. but now the wind will shift a bit. they will be light tomorrow, 5 to 10 miles per hour, but the shift to the west, and even to the northwest, that is good news for south lake tahoe, but it means the fire crews may have to redeploy resources the battle of fire on the southern flank as it continues to grow. in terms of better news, they will not find it this weekend, because another heat dome to take control of the weather as we head into the weekend, but let's look way ahead, beyond the

threatening south lake tahoe at this point but on the southern perimeter of that fire, away from myers and southlaketed to grow a bit and it is putting more smoke into the sky because we get into thursday and friday, the upper levels of the atmosphere are going to be able to tap into the fires near sequoia, and the caldor fire. so, it does not look like it will be a major smoke inundation, but no going into thursday and friday, air quality could go downhill. we will let you know how that plays out. we are much better of that stuff when we get to within a 24 hour window. let's give that another 12 hours or so and we will see how that will come together. mid-50s for morning lows tomorrow, let's get his daytime highs in. of her but he gets warmer tomorrow but we did the cooldown today. tomorrow going back up. near 90 for much of the south bay. a lot of mid-80s, mountain view at 84. back in the upper 90s here. where it was low 90s for the inland valleys and east bay today we've got to go back to the upper 90s tomorrow. this will be the top. you will start cooling back down in the seven day forecast. you
