there's a look at all the fires burning in the southland.e looking at this red flag warning with the stronger winds coming in today right here. so they did have a bit of a break but that's over. current winds are on the light side now but they'll continue to increase. there's a look at the afternoon and evening when the gusts from about 20 to even 40 miles an hour from the north and blowing offshore, actually easterly winds, you can see up to 40 to 44 miles an hour for the malibu hills there and out towards altadena, over 35 miles an hour. so unfortunately, that's the first round. and then another round comes in monday into tuesday. and with the offshore winds, the air quality is of course poor right by the fire. but those offshore winds pushing that smoke out to sea. right now we're in the 40s and 50s with our own upper elevation wind allowing for mid 50s from vallejo to sonoma right now, and our wind advisory taking us through tomorrow morning. so you can see the hills here, north east bay, eastern santa clara hills, and the light colors h

firefighters throughout the southland have struggled to get enough water to protect homes during the turns out there's a system designed to deliver a limitless supply from the ocean. it's a system san francicisco firefighters creditd with sparing the city from devastation after the 1989 loma prieta earthquake. it became vital when crews arrived to fight a square block on fire in the city's marina disistrict. ty found the nearby hydrants and underground pipes had run dry. frank blackburn, a retired assistant chief with the san francisco fire department, helped create the system firefighters relied on that day. you can't control the fire, so what you have to do is control around the edges of the fire to prevent the fire from spreading, but you've got to have the water supply. when the hydrants ran dry. san francisco firefighters set up the city's portable water supply system, rapidly deploying hoses and movable hydrants supplied by up to 10,000 gallons per minute of salt water from the bay, pumped out by a city fireboat stationed nearby. we had a conflagration and we were able to keep

governor newsom last week invited incoming president trump to visit the devastation in the southland, but did not receive a response yet. today, house speaker johnson said both he and mr. trump have plans to visit the area, but no specifics have been announced. now, in addition to the politics and the destruction is a lot of heartache and some folks know exactly how excruciating that is firsthand. 475 miles away from the fire zone is the town of paradise, near chico. in 2018, we saw paradise erupt in flames. more than 150,000 acres burned. fueled by dry conditions and heavy winds, firefighters were simply overmatched. a similar script to what's happening in southern california. paradise is now in the midst of a rebirth, something that altadena and pacific palisades will need to do. joining us now is the mayor of paradise, steve crowder. mayor crowder, thanks for making some time for us. you're a very valuable resource in this time. let me just start by asking, how difficult is this for you to see what's unfolding down in southern california? this was probably the most difficult one i

in fact, begin to see those winds starting to pick up in parts of the southland right now. some of those winds blowing to 17 20 miles an hour stronger than that over the mountain tops. now overnight. tonight, we're going to see more of that on the way as those winds going to kind of ramp up outside humidity. yeah, it's very dry out there. here's a look at some of the humidity in southern california can see down below 20%, some cases down to less than 10%. so extremely dry conditions there. make it right for a place that has not seen much in the way of rain at all this season. so now we're looking at the possibility of some of those winds are wrapping up overnight. you see it right here through early tomorrow morning. strong, gusty winds, offshore winds and then all of a sudden as we head toward the middle the day tomorrow, it switches. you see that onshore breeze kick in. and that is going to bring the humidity back up. so that would be some really good news for firefighters there. in the meantime, as you can imagine, all that smoke just kind of settling in the greater los

in san jose, continuing the dryness of the southland.nd then lake tahoe is going to do well for snowfall. these systems, these types of systems, have a tendency to hang up on the hill. right. and that's what's going to happen friday evening. it clears out. and then you see the valley fog return on saturday morning. but saturday looks like a nice day in the valley. fog in the valley, fog. we'll see you around here too. always an indication of stability right. and that's what we're going to see. so friday is the wet day. saturday. sunday. look money tomorrow looks nice. rainfall. pretty light until you get up here around cape mendocino. you're up into the two and three and four inch range of water. these are the forecast highs for tomorrow. warmer. nicer than it was today. plenty of sunshine, a few clouds, but. but not bad. more sunshine than we've been seeing. friday. there's rain, scattered showers, we'll call it. and then saturday, sunday and monday and the extended kind of shows dry for a while. so we'll see how that works out. >> good

dozens of fire crews from the bay area who tonight are on the front lines, battling the flames in the southland. nbc bay area's marianne favro is here with a closer look at what they have been facing. marianne. the bay area crews are understandably exhausted. they are working 24 hour shifts in intense heat, and they are seeing winds stronger than many of them have ever faced before. as the firefight wages on tonight in southern california, bay area fire crews from oakland say conditions have improved since they first arrived last week. facing winds topping 80 miles an hour. it was definitely incredibly intense, incredibly hot, very low fuel moistures and just a youou know, i've heard one of my colleagues describe it as a hellscape, you know, just an entire wall of flames as far as they could see surrounding them. more than a dozen oakland firefighters are in southern california with three engines and a water tender. truck crews say, winds those initial hours on the front lines made firefighting nearly impossible. you're not able to do anything with the hose stream and try and spray at that wind

is deployment day for many local firefighters headed down south to fight five fires ravaging the southland. >> while there is a certain excitement and anticipation, every one of us is very aware that this is a dangerous occupation and that we will be in perilous way. >> battalion chief javier asensio says this second santa clara county strike team. 23 02a is destined for the front lines of the eaton fire. >> we are trying to help out with the california mutual aid system, our neighbors down south need our assistance. there are structures that have already burned, and that is our primary focus is structure protection, life safety and structure protection. >> this group comprises five engines, one from mountain view, san jose and sunnyvale, and two from the county. the 22 firefighters have special wildland fire training and tools to lend a hand for up to two weeks. alameda county also adding a fire strike team to the fray. engine companies from oakland, hayward and fremont and two from the county are now in southern california as well. >> i think they're preparing to get right into the heat

and we're following the weather here in the bay area and the southland because the fires in la, you know, everyone down, there's hoping it works in their favor. hopefully it comes down. at least it's not as windy as yesterday was but still breezy enough that we have an extension of red flag warnings and those high wind warnings too up here in the bay. we are enjoying a calm day. look at all that sunshine in san jose area. we're going to be seeing low 70's later on this afternoon and absolutely gorgeous day for the bay on southern california. the fire danger still persists. we have those red flag warnings and high wind warnings extended through tomorrow night. a continuation of the stronger winds and it looks like more wind into next week is looking likely to up here in the bay. things are comparatively quiet. we have seen our advisories expire already had expired yesterday morning about the only windiest spots are areas like the delta. the rest of us are comparatively calm. temperatures are starting to climb. it's a lot of 50's. a few low 60's. returning now with palo alto at 60 degrees.

sorit really is all across the southland critical fire. what through wednesday. so through 6 o'clock conditions do start to improve thursday into friday. this kind of shows you the wildfire danger. you can see where these numbers are very high right now. but as we move into tomorrow, unfortunately, you see the same kind of story. it isn't until we get past this. we get into wednesday night and thursday that we're finally gonna catch a break. here's the wind right now. again, you can see some of these gusts here 40 miles per hour. that is very dangerous. when taking you through tonight into tomorrow morning, staying that way. still going to be a really rough night tonight. and then throughout the day tomorrow. but now i'm gonna take you to 6 o'clock. this is when that red flag warning starts to expire. this is when you see the difference wednesday night into thursday. now we're seeing these numbers start to come down. that is going to be a really good moment for firefighters to be able to try and get some more containment. so red flag warnings obviously up all acr

things are very, very difficult in the southland. >> let's go over to connor hansen. he is in la where enforcements have arrived earlier today to help crews get a handle on the fires. >> more firefighters and more water tankers have arrived right here in los angeles county as they brace for another round of strong santa ana winds. southern california, once again under a red flag warning days after massive fires broke out around los angeles county. wind gusts will not be as powerful as last week's, but officials warn they could be strong enough to turn one spark into something more. >> it's so dry because of these winds that the brush or fuel, if an ember lands on it, has a 65% of ignition. >> some 14,000 crews from multiple states, as well as mexico and canada, are staging on the ground and in the air. and cal fire is asking people here to avoid certain high risk activities. >> that means like no mowing right now. if you're going to run over a rock, if you're driving, make sure you're not driving a chain in just one week. >> fires have burned more than 40,000 acres. o

but i would definitely be nice to get more rain in here and especially in the southland.ere are the highs from today. well above the average 5 to 10 degrees, or at least 5 to 8 degrees above the average. and then there's a live camera shot. so tonight's cold nights or days are getting a little longer, nights getting a little shorter but not much. and so the long nights going to get you a frost advisory in those inland bay valleys. so with frost advisories and do what you do, just know that in the morning you're probably gonna have to scrape the windshield. if you had it this morning, frost, that is, you'll have it again tomorrow morning. along the coast, we've got some coastal fog that wants to work its way in. we'll see some valley fog return, but that's the big weather story. the other big weather story, of course, is la is getting a break from the robust offshore winds that have been plaguing them for the last week. so that's good getting a chance to clean up. but for us it's just like, hey, waiting on the rain and the next chance right now looks like it's kind of late

california, as thousands still can't go home, next on the nine will focus on what's happening in the southland as there are new concerns about winds and why firefighters say the coming days are critical. we're also hearing from several oakland firefighters who are in southern california battling the wildfires. why? they say the lessons they are learning dow to the nine crystal clear thanks to winds in the bay area and beyond. it makes for an awfully pretty picture, but it's a dire situation thanks to the weather in southern california. crews there continue to build containment lines as fire is raging through los angeles county, but it comes as strong winds gusts are returning to the forecast today, and officials are now bracing for potential flare ups. >> fox's connor hanson is in los angeles this morning with the latest on the developing situation. >> nearly a week after several wildfires started to tear through the los angeles area, firefighters are seeing some progress. but officials are warning this fight is far from over. >> this is what's left. everything is decimated. the town is decima

there is a rare warning for the southland. it's called a pds.nd the pds is particularly dangerous situation. this essentially is a level up. this is the area in purple. this is a level up from a red flag warning. so it's like taking your taking it all the way up and beyond. so we saw one of these yesterday as well. we haven't really had one of these in northern california yet. but when you see pds you know you've got some serious business going on up there. the winds right now are not that out of control. 15 to 20 miles an hour in the hills. i did pick up some winds out of oxnard at about 40 miles an hour. out by just north of malibu. those winds will pick up later on tonight into tomorrow morning. this is the palisades. wind 15 mile an hour. wind gusts. still not a lot. but as we get into the midnight hours, you'll see here and into the overnight tonight into tomorrow morning, the winds really pick up. note the colors. this is tomorrow morning at 6 a.m, the colors representing where the wind fields are. and then watch it peaks. the winds peak a
