there are shell trade routes all over the southwest. shell was a primary material for making jewelry, for using in burials, and you had to walk 600 miles to get it, down to the sea of cortez, the water that's in between baja and the main land of mexico. and i tracked routes all the way down to the border over years and then across the mexican border into sonora and then it a place called penacate and then a dune, 5,000 square miles of sand dunes, a beautiful landscape, but no water out there. but pottery, broken pottery all over in certain places and pieces of shell left behind where you could see that the people were crossing these dunes to the sea and picking up shell and then crossing back and then moving it up to phoenix and then from phoenix distributing it throughout the rest of the southwest. the first trip i took out there, we hit this mountain range right at the edge of the dunes. and we were carrying, i don't know, on that trip we were maybe carrying 80 or 90 pounds of water and moving it out to the sand and then we'd drop a c

it is all of this air just down to our southwest that is moving in our direction. as far as some of those numbers go, got to take a look here. it's still 51 in minneapolis, 60 in chicago, and 63 in kansas city. we have a warm front passing by to the north. that's bringing in the warmer air. all of this out to our west, that's the next one that will move our way. this is how it works out. tomorrow, sunshine, high pressure still in control. as we head into the next couple of days, that front gets a bit closer. we'll see the clouds come in during the day on thursday. it's thursday night into friday there's a chance for rain. with that rain coming through, it will knock down temperatures. by friday, we start to drop. but the thing is, it's nothing all that extreme. the forecast looks like this. on the waters, just a light wind out of the south early in the day. it will pick up through the afternoon and we could see small craft advisories be issued later in the day also. sunset now 6:05, 6:29 for sunrise. take a look at the forecast. down to 29. by tomorrow, we're up to

well, on july 12th the army of the southwest finally marched into helena. this brought to a close one of the most remarkable operations of the civil war. during the first six months of '62, the federals marched 700 miles from raleigh to helena, across some of the most difficult terrain in the country, and fought and won a major battle against imposing odds. no other union operation at this stage of the war lasted as long, covered as much territory, or achieved its objectives as effectively. the army of the southwest secured missouri, freed union resources for use elsewhere, and dealt confederate arkansas and slavery a heavy blow. few other civil war operations anywhere had such an impact on the course of events. it truly was a campaign worth commemorating, worth remembering, and i'm so glad that so many of you have come out tonight while we've had this little discussion. thank you so much. >> thank you very much for coming, and you're dmised. >>> as commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the civil war continues, join us every saturday at 6:00 and 10:00 p
