in 2007 there were no girls in school in southwest afghanistan. the taliban ran the medrossas, those are gone now. currently if you walked into southwest afghanistan you would see many marines but you would also see 25,000 kids in school. you would see close to 3,000 girls. there is a teacher's college that has been renovated in the big city and there are aspiring teachers studying at that college. there are women's centers established in two of those districts and there are afghan parents and educators involved in their local schools. and to just pull a thread on what many of our senior leadership has said throughout the couple of days, indeed the u.s. military is a global force for good and we will always seek opportunities to leave every place better than when we arrived. and i appreciate your time, appreciate your attention. thank you. . there are shell trade routes all over the southwest. shell was a primary material for making jewelry, for using in burials, and you had to walk 600 miles to get it, down to the sea of cortez, the water that's in between baja and the main land of mexico. and i tracked routes all the way down to the border over years and then across the mexican border into sonora and then it a place called penacate and then a dune, 5,000 square miles of sand dunes, a beautiful landscape, but no water out there. but pottery, broken pottery all over in certain places and pieces of shell left behind where you could see that the people were crossing these dunes to the sea and picking up shell and then crossing back and then moving it up to phoenix and then from phoenix distributing it throughout the rest of the southwest. the first trip i took out there, we hit this mountain range right at the edge of the dunes. and we were carrying, i don't know, on that trip we were maybe carrying 80 or 90 pounds of water and moving it out to the sand and then we'd drop a c

this place being the southwest where i have spent my entire life. i don't know how far i've walked out there. i don't know how many pairs of boots that i've gone through where i've taken needles and dental floss and sewed the leather back together. i don't know how long i've been walking out there. and miles don't matter, days don't matter. it all adds up into this, into movement, into walking through the labyrinth that's opened up into the ground. finding places, places to camp behind cliffs that have fallen, finding sanctuary, places where the wind won't touch you, places that are eroded out of the earth like bones. everything is revealed in the desert. there are no questions out there. there's just ground, solid ground, opened layer after layer after layer. some people come back from, say, the edge of the grand canyon and they say it makes them feel small. i understand that but i think it may be a misconception. it may be that it's not a landscape that makes you feel small, it's a landscape that gets rid of your sense of scale entirely because th

this is new for southwest. meanwhile, also this week, we also had americanairlines unveiling a fairly radical new fee structure whereby coach passengers will have three different tiers to choose from. a basic bare bones no frills tier, where extras will be added on, and a new tier that will cost $68 more where you'll be able to dodge the $150 change fee if you had to change and check a free bag each way. that will receive you 25 bucks per leg. for an extra $88 on top of the normal coach ticket, you get the $150 fee waiver, baggage waiver plus get free booze on the flight. what does the traveler need to know about this? basically american collected about $1 billion last year in change and baggage fees. what they seem to be gambling on is that they're going to make more money by offering this fee and look at it, the $25 baggage fee, for example. if you go for an extra 68 bucks upgrade here, that's $50 there. there's your baggage fee. american is figuring another 18 bucks on top of that to avoid the possibility of

sectors, we have southwest airlines.re known for their popular no frills but no fee policy is now saying it will start charging new travel fees next year as part of a plan to boost revenue. southwest shares are up better than 1% at $10.24. it's up almost 20% this year. it's changing its stripes. very interesting. is that going to hurt them though in the long run? >> i don't think it will hurt them, sue. it's a bit of a misnomer saying that southwest has never had fees in the past. it has had fees. what they've marketed has been not charging a fee for those first two bags, and that's really the biggest fee that's out there in the industry. what they've announced today is starting january 1st they're going to add on a couple of fees that they hope will both raise revenue and change the behavior of passengers. first of all, they're going to be charging for premium boreding. you want to be one of the first once on the plane, you have to pay more, whether it's $5 or $10. if you have a flight and you have a reserve ticket but
