a handful of bay area southwest flights are cancelled this morning. the airline says it missed scheduled inspections for some of its jets. bob redell live at sjc. no cancellations there, but there are some at another local airport? >> reporter: correct. no cancellations here, nor at sfo, but southwest airlines has cancelled flights at oakland international. that airport confirming with us that at least five of those cancellations are due to these flight inspections. you might recall yesterday, the airline grounded about 20% of its fleet. southwest airlines had failed to perform a required inspection on the backup rutter systems. the airline realized its mistake, notified the faa. the faa overnight has since said that southwest can continue flying those aircraft as long as those inspections are completed within five days. a pilot says if the airline had not caught this lapse in inspections and federal investigators did instead, southwest could have faced a substantial fine. coming up, we'll have reaction from passengers on southwest airlines' inspectio

i'm a fan of southwest airlines. my mother-in-law used to work for southwest airlines.how can the airline still fly these planes if they need to be checked out? >> reporter: we know that because of this issue, 80 flights yesterday were canceled but today, the faa is saying that they can continue to fly the planes if the issue is addressed in the next five days. if you have a flight booked on southwest, you are probably asking the question how can this be safe if these inspections were not done is it safe to fly on this plane. the bottom line is this is bad. an airline should not miss a routine safety inspection but you know what it indicates is sloppy recordkeeping, potentially sloppy safety record, safety culture. i want to kind of show you what we are talking about here. the system we are talking about is a backup system which essentially powers the rudder. this is the rudder here which essentially helps the plane to turn. so again, not a primary system a backup system. but the reason why aviation is so safe is because you have all of these redundancies. when you don'
