but not long ago i was up at a place called chimney rock in southwest colorado. and it's over 8,000 feet. and you are up at the southern end ftd rocky mountains and there is this scarp of rock that rises up probably about a thousand feet out of a valley floor and right at the tip of this scarp there are two twin towers of rock. if you get to a certain place on top of this very narrow butte, you can see between these twin towers and there happens to be a great house built between these two towers and every 18.6 years when the moon goes into its northernmost point on the horizon, it rises between those two towers. i was there at the beginning of the last 18.6 year cycle and we stood up there, probably 20 of us, researchers, forest service people, all gathered at the same spot with cameras and huddled -- it was late december at 8,000 feet and we were all watching this gap. and somebody had done very intricate work to figure out exactly where you need to stand to see the light at exactly the right time. and as we were all gathered up there, i remember this older arch

thursday night into friday morning when the incredible storm moved through, and it's southwest, especially in littleton, coloradogeneration of two storms coming together with dynamic up lift, and for the most part it was hail and dime-sized hail and nickel, but we even saw golf ball-sized hail, and that's how they had to use the snowplows to push it away, and four feet of flooding, and littleton, colorado, getting the worst of it. and currently the temperature at the rim fire is 37 degrees, and then the winds coming from the south-southwest, and we have seen winds going different directions moving the fire around. dew point incredibly low, and that's the amount of moisture in the air, and wind gusts were about twenty seven miles per hour, and this fire did double in size overnight, and it's a function of two things. the winds and the terrain. what we talk about with winds is really the funneling of the winds. what we will see this afternoon, sustained winds, 10 to 15, 20 to 25-mile-per-hour wind gusts, and the problem weather-wise is no chance for rain at all overt next few days, and the winds will continue to b

southwest. we have no choice but to figure out how to create a sustainable relationship with the colorado river. without the hoover dam, we wouldn't be here. without the canals to bring the water to us, we wouldn't be but this is a desert. there would be a few people here but not all of us certainly. the great megalopolis grown here in phoenix and los angeles, all of those areas wouldn't have the growth that has if we don't pay attention to the importance of using the river anymore sustainable way. that's been huge challenge and a look at 100 years of a rivers history, and i've only seen some real hope towards the end of that 100 years, and beyond, and the 21st century where starting to pay attention of a crisis before we look for reasonable solution. but looking at the whole picture, looking at the whole picture of the river helps us understand yes, why we exist the way we do here in the southwest. it also helps us understand the role of rivers surface water in arid regions, and other parts of the world. but it also gives us a larger picture, a piece of a larger picture of how humans relate to

desert southwest is getting a lot more moisture and more rain/flooding likely by the end of the weekend. even a lot of areas of rain and wet weather through the rockies. here's a picture from colorado. this is near littleton. that's a car stuck in the hail. literally hail was covering the ground. the snow plow had to come to get that vehicle out. pretty incredible. let's talk about the rain. needles, california. mojave desert. one of the driest places. picked up an inch of rain last night. doesn't sound like much to a lot of people around the country. but that is literally about 25% of their annual rainfall. this is one of the driest places there is. significant rains in that region. we could have more coming your way. that rain is dispalting as it heads into areas of nevada and utah today. still the moisture funneling to the north. now a tropical depression down there in the pacific. and all that moisture is going to move up into sunday, monday into areas of arizona, possibly southern california with possibilities of significant rains in areas that don't get a lot. that's a look at story, is the and the wet weather headed your way. >> i'll take a closer look at that weekend foreca
