on may 29, 2012, southwest virginia lost one of its great american heroes, a passionate advocate for veterans and a driving force behind the national d-day memorial in bedford. it is only fitting we honor his memory as we mark the 68th anniversary of d-day this week. born on february 3, 1925, in bristol, tennessee, bob's family later moved to roanoke, virginia. in 1941 at the age of 15 he joined the virginia army national guard, company d, 160th infantry 29th division. a short time later the united states was attacked at pearl harbor and entered the war. on september 27, 1942, the 29th division set sail for england. on d-day, june 6, 1944, bob waded ashore to battle the foes of democrat state omaha beach. he was just 19 years old. his life was forever impacted by the memories of that day. mr. speaker, i have stood on omaha beach in normandy at low tide, which was the circumstances when these brave men landed there on june 6, 1944. the bidth of that beach -- bidth of that beach -- width of that beach, the distance they had to come through machine-gun fire, bombs, and mines is absolute

virginia 31 points. southwest, let's go to southwest. colorado 48 points. nevada 49 points.na 56 points. this is all among latinos. how critical is that to the politics of today given the growing population? because if you look, mr. chairman, at the fact that we've seen an increase in the hispanic population. for example, in north carolina the population of hispanics has gone up 111%. in iowa, 84%. pennsylvania up 83%. the demographics of voters are changing. >> you're absolutely right. in florida it's going to be the divisive vote, i believe. as i assume the chairmanship of the party, first thing we did was start the outreach to the hmz community particularly in central florida where many people don't realize the margin of the last election is explained by the hispanic turnout in central florida. i have to tell you that we are excited about the president's efforts in recent days. he has really increased his stock here and everywhere else among hispanic voters. he was already ahead, but i think what he did was i want to draw a real parallel. these are stark differences. this

could he move a point or two in states in the southwest, in places like florida, virginia, with that kind of message? >> well, i think the speech that governor romney gave was disappointing because he's at about 25% of the latino vote nation nationally. he's going to need over 35% to be competitive and possibly get elected. i don't see how he can make that ground. he's had a very harsh position on immigration. what he simply said at the speech was he changed his style, substance, was more positive on words, but on deeds he fell far short. he still claims he's going to veto the dream act, which gives a path of citizenship to those who served in the military, those students. he's not for comprehensive immigration that legalizes the 12 million. he has refused to take a position on the deportation of the almost 1 million children. so on substance it's very hard for him to change the substance after a primary where each of the republican candidates were competing on who is harsher on immigration. he's also endorsed the arizona act which basicallylatinos. i think latinos will decide this e

southwest freeway. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. traffic. . >>> we are following breaking news from northern virginia, an apartment fire in reston. >> dozens of people have been evacuated and apartments damaged. >> reporter: right now, firefighters are still here trying to take care of some hot spots. the fire has been mostly put out but there is still some smoke coming out of the building over here. people are being allowed back into the apartments that have not been heavily damaged to get medicine, clothes and other things they may need. the fire appears to have started somewhere in or near some of the apartments where you can see it has been destroyed. the complex called sudden ridge is just off north village road. this fire started just after 1:00 this morning b100 people, 54 apartments, had to be evacuated. many of the people likely sleeping at the time. when firefighters arrived, at least two of the apartments were fully engulfed and spreading quickly through the roof t took about 100 firefighters to get this con takenned but not before 10 to 12 apartments were damaged. two to four of them likely destroyed. we do have fairfax

southwest of d.c. winds generally out of the south, maybe 10 miles an hour with highs 70 to 75. we're looking at a few of these sprinkles coming out of virginia and west virginia. what you're seeing to the south and west, i've been checking the observations. doesn't appear any of this is reaching the ground because it's fairly dry. we have seen showers on the east side of the bay on the shoreline around tillman island and st. michaels. you can see some of the showers there. that is kind of falling apart over the last hour or so. temps, big range. we're actually down to 46 in gaithersburg. 48 up in york, pennsylvania. hagerstown 51. 60 at the pax river naval air station. mid-50s in the valley with a couple of showers. down toward harrisonburg we've had a report or two of showers. outside on our weather camera, can't see the clouds but good visibility with 58 degrees and a southwest wind only 5 miles an hour. so another pleasantly cool start to the day. this satellite radar picture, you sort of see this a little bit better. a little twist in the clouds coming through west virginia right now. you see how this is diving off to the east and the re

and that includes panhandle of west virginia and into the northern shenandoah valley where they're getting moderate rain right now. the general flow is southwest to northeast and it's bringing this rain closer to washington. right now in northwest, this little patch of yellow and that's a ban of moderate rain and stretches across the district line and farther to the west, a few scattered showers from mcclain to great falls and then across the potomac into northern montgomery county. this is the heaviest rain these areas in orange and western loudon county and west virginia and up into frederick and washington counties in maryland. a lot of this heavier rain is passing well north of the metro area and as we go forward here over the next 36 hours. all these zones of potential showers. you could see pretty widespread and continuing off and on through the afternoon into the evening. by midnight, a lot of it will be done and passing south and east and after midnight we'll begin to clear out and get sunshine back tomorrow. tomorrow looking like a delightful day. but for the rest of the afternoon, keep an umbrella handy. how much rain will we get? so
