host: pete souza, did you know at that point what you had in that picture? guest: i was in that room for 40 minutes. that's about how long the mission took and i took probably 100 pictures in that 40 minutes. i had a lot of pictures throughout the day. i think i took a thousand pictures that they and then it was not till the next day that i actually did the editing and got it down to 10 or 20 pictures. i thought it was a special photograph. i didn't know it would get the kind of attention it did. host: what's your favorite photograph of president obama? guest: i don't think i really have one. it's kind of a difficult decision to take eight years of work and narrow it down to one. i had a hard enough time taking those 1.96 million photographs and getting it down to 300 plus for this book. that was hard enough and to get that down to one is like really hard for me to say. host: out of the 300 in the forthcoming book, what are a couple that you really really like? guest: i would probably gravitate towards the ones that show him as a person, what was he like as

tammie souza is here now. just tracking the latest conditions on the storm system and which areas will get the most rain. >> it locks like right now in philadelphia we're seeing the heaviest band of rain off toward trenton down to the south we have seen heavy showers moving across southern delaware into the cape may area. a lot of that has moved out over the atlantic. but we have a steady rain that's going to make for a long commute home. take it easy. we're probably going to see anywhere from 1 to 3 inches of rain depending on where you live once this winds down. we have our storm ranger 10 here in lewis beach. you can see the heavier rain is moving past cape may beginning to clear out of parts of delaware and dover still getting stead iier showers. also milford seeing the steadiec rain across cape may. the wide picture shows we have a while to go before the system clears our area. it looks like we have nicer weather on the way for tomorrow. that's a good thing because it looks like harvey will bring us tropi

joining us in new york is an author and photographer his name is pete souza. what you do for living? >> right now trying to finish up my book comments pretty much done but there's a lot of last-minute production things were dealing with. >> what did you do for a living? >> for eight years i was with president obama for the chief white house -- was to document the presidency for history. what that means depends on the photographer and the president. this case, president obama understood the role of chile visually documenting his presidency. so he gave me access to pretty much everything. i was able to create an archive of photographs that will live in perpetuity at the national archive. >> how long has the president had a photographer like that? >> i think the job first took hold during the kennedy administration. kennedy had to military photographers assigned to the white house. when lg lbj came in who was the first one to document for history everything that johnson did. he set the bar so high they think they're all trying to reach his level. >> had to get a

"i want to get your reaction to the news that they grand jury has been convened here and that subpoenas have been issued relating to the 2016 meeting between the president's son and a russian lawyer. what's your reaction? >> i think that this is a little bit of a frankenstein, rosenstein creation. the reason is not because there is necessarily any incriminating evidence itch don't object to looking at it. think that having been in d.c. and around d.c. since the '80s there's a logic to the independent counsel. the independent counsel is task with a mission. if he comes back and says there's nothing there in a sense he has failed so he views his success as getting somebody, locking them up, arresting somebody. so there's a lodge logic here -- logic mere that makes the process not necessarily a search for truth but rather a way to vindicate the process. >>
