i came down in a different soyuz, tma-6. so the first thing i had to do when we docked was take my space suit and seat and move it to the soyuz here. that was going to be my means of egress in case of emergency. so, we slowly back away and we do about an orbit and a half. now remember, this is a vacuum. we are traveling over 17,000 miles an hour. but when we get down to that 100 or 60 mile layer we talked about earlier, you will encounter friction. so what we do is, we jettison the engine, and also that habitat module, the spherical section. that is loaded with all the garbage and stuff we want to throw away. we are in this dissent -- descent moducle which has a heat shield on top. as we enter the atmosphere things will heat up to thousands of degrees. anything without the heat shield will burn up. in order for us to land in kazakhstan, we have to enter the atmosphere somewhere over argentina. once you are in, you have very little control, once you start getting into the atmosphere. we had a little tumbling. we had an air le

just like when i was chiming up the soyuz -- climbing up the soyuz rocket when we were about to launch, i was saying, god, i feel okay now, but what if i get up there d i freak out? fortunately, i didn't. my fear was always before the eventnot, fortunately, during the the event. i'llet you read this about the iss. i think most of the people in this room know this stuff. just that, y know, the space station is roughly 240 miles above the earth, it varies a bit, and al that you orbit every 90 minutes. soou get to see 16 sunrises and sunsets every day. this is what a soyuz looks like being pulled out to the launch pad. i had 30 friends and family come over and you can see ross cosmos they're a little less formal about the whole deal than nasa would be. they actually let people get up and touch the rocket while t being towed out. being my a and a lot of you, can you imagine saluting a ruian general? we spent two days living on the soyuz. we docked at the space station. i was surprised about the combination of familiar and alien looking out the windows. if you look out at what you can see on the vehicle you are in, the space station is made out of two components. one is highly machined industrial, gear work and solar panels and materials. those things look technical. unlike an airplane that needs a sleek body around it, these are exposed mechanics. on top of that, in many areas, there are these thermal protections and shields that are blankets of materials that are handstitched around all of the parts. it looks like grandma was invited over to make a quilt. those things in juxtaposition i found fascinating. unlike earth -- even in this room, the way i can see you is the reflections of the bright lights on me and i get that backscatter. on earth, there is scattering lights all over the place. if you want dramatic wedding you have to create contrast -- magic lighting -- dramatic lighting, you have to create contrast. if you look at an aluminum pole, on

i have done how many soyuz launches. you want to try to tell the story in a unique and challenging way. that can be difficult when it's repetitive. it is very exciting to have different opportunities. this is out on a boat in the ocean getting some shots around sunrise. a remote set up. i was so happy they put that sign there. i started dipping my 10 oh into infrared. this is false color infrared remote camera shot. i'm still working on that a little bit and will make it better next time. -- i started dipping my toe into infrared. i went to retrieve this remote and was happy. i was fortunate enough to go over to japan for the launch of the gpm spacecraft. i had never been to japan before. i always wanted to go. i had an incredible expense there. i really enjoyed it. not unlike our visitor center. it's interesting to see what similar and different. just driving around you see space related themes everywhere. h2 a rocket. it is a beautiful rocket. it was gorgeous. there were servers out there earlier. i was upset that i mi
