this is a special city. we have a community that actually use the children of the community as their children, like the mayor said. and it makes such a big difference, having them step up and be there for the children. it has been fabulous. and to have these advocates, it is great to have a relationship with them. my hat is always of to them. they pushed us. they pushed the school district. they pushed us to do great things for our children. a couple of years ago, we had a conversation to talk about the a-g program for all students. we started with ninth graders. everyone takes required glasses. and as a result, yeah, we have a few kids who do not make it. and so, this summer, we were trying to figure out -- we had some money. think about it -- in california 70% of all the money for summer school has been wiped out. we no longer get the funding. how are we going to do that. we decided to prioritize and give summer school to our seniors, because if they cannot pass, they will not graduate. every year, we have

and in san francisco almost every weekend there's a special event in the city. we are trying to do a better job of tracking special events because right now our systems don't separate some of the hours we need to do a better job of that. the second bullet on this page is also critical because the facilities are in such poor condition, we're having to maintain and back fill them on a regular basis and it requires a lot of attention from our maintenance staff. so as was mentioned, traditionally the m.t.a. has managed the overtime costs within the budget so for example, because we have so many savings and because we're not hiring quickly, those dollars available in our nonovertime line items to cover overtime costs and since i've been here for the past four years, we've always exceeded our overtime business but not our overall budget in salaries and benefits. that seems to be the way to create flexibility, to include overtime and to keep the positions on our inventory so we can continue to hire them. this is my last slide. what we're trying to do, these are the five

cities i think in this planet and certainly in the united states. it is built with indigenous resources to that help make us that special. our natural environment both by land and by sea and water. and just a wonderful history that we have made us a standout city where i think other cities, which they had some of that aspect we doff. we're also a cost prohibitive city. it's expensive to be here. i think it's extremely important we remain sensitive to strategy and implementation of making sure the city retains its class diversity. there's always a lot of discussion about diversity in terms of culture and race. class diversity is something that shouldn't be subordinate to that discussion. i want to make sure that san francisco has a working class population. i want to make sure we do not take for granted because we are seen as more cosmopolitan, that that excuses us from not tackling issues of poverty, which there are still substantial pockets of it in san francisco. just by what others may argue. that to me obligates our requirement to make sure this city, being in its reputation of being forward thinking and progressive,
