jade hernandez is live at jackie speier's office in san mateo and joins us with some of the results the meeting. >> reporter: good afternoon. this meeting wrapped up 5 minutes ago. for some, it was disturbing. for others it was informative. jackie speers called pg&e to meet with san mateo mayors to discuss the integrity of the pipeline in the county. they met at her office and this gave pg&e a chance to discuss the document they just filed with the cpuc. the document outlines what they have done to determine what went wrong when a 36-inch pipeline exploded and killed eight people in san bruno. they've done an aerial and ground review of the pipes. pg&e has not been able to use what is called pigging the lines which tests integrity. that was an issue brought up today. >> until we know why, it's hard to know what steps need to be taken to protect residents throughout this region from that happening again. >> reporter: congresswoman speier explained how the area was evaluated, each time coming up differently. $10million has been invested in the pig system. they haven't -- pg&e says the lin

pg&e answered questions for two hours from mayors, jackie speier in a closed-door meeting. they learned that because the pipes are all of different diameters there is no easy way to evaluate them. they would have to go with pressure testing, taking large segment of pipeline out of service for long periods, a second concern there are inconsistent results on a stretch of pipe north of the san bruno runture . the mayors' third concern, pg&e's apparent contention that the age of the pipes is not a major factor in determining their integrity, that it's only important in 10% of the cases and jackie speier expressed frustration that federal authorities haven't determined a cause of the san bruno fire yet. >> i think there's just an ongoing frustration that we still don't know why the pipe exploded in the glenview area. and until we know why, it's hard to know what steps need to be taken to protect residents throughout the region. >> reporter: pg&e is expected to have a more complete review of its pipeline network to the puc by december. now, reporters asked the pg&e representative

congresswoman jackie speier will host a town hall meeting.reports about concerns about more pressure in the pipeline. >> reporter: the state public utilities commission and pg&e say it is possible if there is a severe cold snap this winter they may need to increase the pressure in the pipeline. now, that's because the pipeline that exploded here in san bruno and two others are currently running at just 80% capacity under puc order those pipelines serving the peninsula and also san francisco. the concern is if there is a heavy demand for gas, it's possible some customers like hospitals and some other commercial customers that are considered noncore customers could actually lose gas service. so the puc has agreed that it will allow its commission president to have the authority to authorize the gas pressure increase if necessary. there is no assurance that that is going to happen. but the puc commission president now does have that authority. as for this community meeting this evening, let's give the details. it's going to be at 6:30 this eveni
