speier no i don't know that he would have understood it in those terms. the middle-class is so much more current in our time. i never saw a phrase like that in the documents at the time but i do think that he felt very strongly that every person in this country have the right to a living wage and the right to have a certain kind of security, a small home, the ability to feed your family. those things seemed to him to be a fundamental -- and he would have called it a fundamental human right. it's interesting because he understood so many things in economic terms in the u.n. itself has so much difficulty over the question of economic rights. so there is a lot of interesting speculation as to what the u.n. would have looked like had roosevelt been there. thank you all so very much. [laughter] speier said when you are diplomat you are pursuing government policy.don't you agree that policy depends for its formation on members of parliament coming out to a country and being given the real facts when they are on the ground. not that we are all doomed but there is a real problem here and that is at risk of failure. this is going well but that person is corrupt. don't you think that we need to be given the absolute truth as you see it as an ambassador? >> yes, i think you should be. i don't think an investor should be telling you that things are better than they really are but the big gamut in there in terms of how you explain the policy. the committee when they come out usually are asking very pertinent critical questions. many of you have your own views on the policy. you have to did defend the policy within the context of giving you the best possible advice but there has to be a level of advice, level of frankness between the ambassador and the ministers who are responsible for the policy. it is not at the same order i would suggest as the leve

speier expressed concern about the sequester with members of both parties -- i keep hearing republicans saying we need to fix the sequester and republicans the saying government should be out people's lives. aren't you are you basically saying we need to fix the sequester and -- [inaudible] this committee put out a report said the sequester -- there are people tied to the government even in your own party. >> because the president didn't help and didn't lead when he came to fixing are working with a supercommittee senate democrats didn't cooperate in helping make the supercommittee function we ended up with a sequester. the sequester is like taking a meat axe to federal spending. it is not, no one on either side of the aisle believes this is an appropriate way to reduce the role of government. so that is why the house acted to pass a bill to replace the sequester, continues to sit in the united states senate.
