spike lee, great to have you on. >> always, my man, anderson cooper. >> all right. ike, you take care. >> bye-bye. >> spike lee spoke briefly about the cross-currents running through the african-american community when it comes to gay and lesbian rights. let's talk more about this. joining me now is espn senior writer and cnn contributor, l.z. granderson and founder of your black world.com. professor, you just heard from spike talking about this before. do you agree with what he said? he says there's a lot of home oh phobia in the black community. do you buy that? >> well, i think there's homophobia everywhere. i think that to talk about the conservative black church tradition in a way that defines it as being somehow pathological because the traditions are different from mainstream america is a little bit insulting. it almost implies that the african-american community is backward if they don't agree with the gay lifestyle. i think that disagreeing with someone does not mean that people have to be disrespected, and so i don't think anybody can support clear homophob

. >> abby, i was watching spike lee give an interesting interview to anderson cooper earlier in whiche said the reality is a lot of african-americans remain quite homophobic and that would have been one of the main concerns, i'm sure, for jason collins was that even his own community, there would be a lot of people who would be quite bigoted towards him and that may have been one of the reasons he had this protective shield which involved carolyn and the relationship he had. >> absolutely. but to mark's point, i think he has made it clear that he has known for a very long time that he is gay. i think we're seeing that we all are made differently and i love the quote that he said that we're all trying to figure out the puzzle that we are, and you know, you can't help but think how courageous he has been. but at the same time, i mean, knowing that he has been gay, this is really back to his ex-girlfriend and i do understand where she's coming from. i do understand probably the frustration and it's probably going to take some time for all of this to set in not only for her but for those
