springfield was hardest-hit. at least four people were killed. and market jitters. weak numbers on jobs and manufacturing sent stocks plunging yesterday. the dow jones industrials lost more than 2%. the worst decline since last august. >>> to a story now that drew a huge following on the internet. it's about a guy who broke into a home in the san francisco bay area, stole a laptop. well, that was a mistake in this case. the computer had a secret that made the thief the kind of twitter celebrity until the cops came for him. don knapp of our san francisco station explains. >> reporter: joshua kauffman has his laptop back. and some surprisingly intimate close-up pictures of the man police later arrested in connection with the theft. pictures taken secretly by kauffman's computer. >> shortly after it was stolen i realized that i had this software that i could turn on. >> reporter: this is the man caught by the stolen computer's hidden program, photographed while sleeping on a couch, and sitting in bed while using the computer. not knowing that the computer he was using

same with springfield. in each case, a flanking storm developed down to the southwest and quickly rotated. that was the sudden thing about each of these tornadoes. usually, you have to wait about 45 minutes after the first rotation before a tornado drops out. in joplin and in springfield, massachusetts, the tornado came right out of the gun. that's really unusual. >>> dr. forbes, i read a memo you wrote this morning saying the death toll this year, you would have to go back to, what, the post-depression era, 1936, to find a higher number. and let me ask you about the myths we grew up believing, that you never saw tornadoes in cities. that tornadoes existed in the tornado alley. both of those have fallen by the wayside this year. >> they really have. and the city thing really is a myth. i took statistics and accounted for the counties that have major scenes. and they had more tornadoes per mile than the state area averaged. so cities actually get hit more than this rural areas, that's what the statistics sho

amazing video coming out of springfield. the man who shot this escaped but at least four people were killed in the storms. one of the twisters spun right through the heart of the city and across the connecticut river. you can see it is sucking the water right up into a vortex. tornadoes aren't unprecedented in new england but they certainly are unusual. rob marciano has some details on this. how often do tornadoes hit in massachusetts. >> every few years. they are typically not this strong. the last one that hit in massachusetts was in '08. that was an ef-0, judging from the look of this and the damage, it is just coming in now. this was easily an ef-2, if not an ef-3 tornado. winds well over 100 miles an hour. not only trees being taken out but brick buildings in some cases being ripped apart as well. here is what it looked like on the radar scope. we had a couple of cells that rolled through springfield, one at 4:30. that's where this one came through. what makes us more unusual, at 6:00, another one went through springfie

and abc's sharyn alfonsi has arrived in springfield. she joins us now. sharyn, what is the scene there tonight? what have you learned? >> reporter: terry, just to give you an idea of what this tornado did, this is concrete cinder blocks, destroyed this building. this was an auto body shop. as you can see, there's not a whole lot left of it. the amazing thing is, there were people inside when the tornado struck. they said they saw it coming through town. they took cover, everybody inside okay. and there are scenes like this all through town. we made our way through town, we could see all kinds of downed trees. we you a apartment buildings with the sides ripped off with the couch and the coffee table still in perfect place. it's really quite a scene. and right now the real focus is getting emergency vehicles through these towns to do any kind of search and rescue so they can get an idea how big this tornado was and how many more victims may or may not be out here. that's what they're trying to assess. it's an eerie feeling here tonight, terry, because all
