thank you. >> sreenivasan: good evening, and thank you for joining us. ruth bader ginsburg, the second woman to serve as a u.s. supreme court justice, who became the leader of the court's liberal wing, died yesterd at the age of 87. ginsburg was at home with her family. her death was due to complications from metastatic pareatic cancer. outside the supreme court, where she served for 27 years, mourners continued to add to an informal memorial that began last night with candles, flowers and notes to the justice. president trump heard the news of ginsburg's death fr reporters as he left a campaign rally in minnesota late yesterday. >> you are telling me now for the first time. she led an amazing life. what else can you say? she was an amazing woman-- whether you agreed or not-- she was an amazing woman who led an amazing life. i am actually saddened to hear that. i am saddened to hear that. thank you very much. >> sreenivasan: this morning, the president tweeted to fellow republicans that selecting a supreme court justice is "the most important" of decisio

>> sreenivasan: and things could get contentious. i mean, democrats wouldn't like this idea. >> if trump wins in november, this issue essentially goes away. because even if the democrats were to wind up taking the senate, the lame duck republicans in november could sa look, the people chose trump, it's his nomination and fine. if trump were to lose and the senate were to go democratic and the lame duck republican still said, we're going to confirm trump's nominee in late november, then you're talking about whatever analogy you like. defcon one, armageddon on steroids. as chuck schumer said, everything's on the table. that could mean expanding the size of the supreme court. it could mean giving statehood to puerto rico and perhaps the district of columbia for four more democratic senators. that means the entire framework of our system is being essentially reduced to who has the power. >> sreenivasan: it seems like this will galvanize people on both sides to get out and vote. >> four years ago, it was clear that the issue of a supreme

thank you. >> sreenivasan: good evening and thank you for joining us. within hours of the official announcement of president trump's nominee to the supreme court, republicans announced their fast-track schedule for senate confirmation hearings beginning october 12. at the white house yesterday, the nominee, federal appeals court judge amy coney barrett, said she is prepared for what is already a contentious, partisan debate over her nomination. >> i have no illusions that the road ahead of me will be easy, either for the short term or the long haul. >> sreenivasan: senate judiciary chairman lindsey graham said after hearings in his committee, the senate should be able to take up a vote on barrett's confirmation before november 3. >> we'll start on the 12th. we'll have four days of hearings. then we'll hold the nomination for a week consistent with the rules of the judiciary committee. hopefully it will come to the floor around the 26th. >> sreenivasan: the republican- controlled senate needs only a simple majority vote to confirm barrett's nomination, a
