joe drew is a charter boat captain riding out the storm on a boat based in st. hns -- i should say in john's pass, florida, which isn't far from tampa. how are you doing there? >> we're doing pretty good. shepard: joe, how'd you make the decision and why? >> i've been on the boat my entire life since i was a small child, third generation captain in the area, and chose to ride it out. i think the boat is very sturdy, stable, it's a big boat, it's a big catamaran, we've got two generators onboard, three anchors ready to drop in case we do leave the slip. but at this point we're just happening tight and hoping for the -- hanging tight and hoping for the best. shepard: what are reasons like now there, joe? >> it's raining pretty good, probably blowing 35, maybe 40 knot, definitely starting to pick up pretty quick. shepard: have you ridden out a storm before? >> i have. i've been in a few storms but never experienced anything to this degree. this'll be a first for me. shepard: any second thoughts at all? >> i've spent, i've been on here the last few nights, definitely

joe, we've seen some pretty bad pictures coming out of st. martin, st. barts, next is puerto rico. how bad is this in your opinion so far and how much worse is it going to get? >> well, puerto rico is fortunately the core of the hurricane staying offshore so while they are getting hurricane conditions on the north coast, this is not nearly as devastating as is going to be for the turks & caicos island and eventually florida wherever it goes ashore and not as devastating on these islands that you referenced and the island of barbuda. i haven't heard any reports out of barbuda which took a direct hit late last nate and we're over 12 hours since this storm has left there so that is really something, but look, this is as bad a hurricane as big a potential for a hurricane in florida as they've ever seen that includes the 1947 west palm beach hurricane, the great labor day hurricane of 1935 through the florida keys. if you look at the tracks of hurricanes through florida in the 1940s, you understand that you are looking at a return to what happened back then with these extreme events and

joe, mika, good morning. you can see here where the storm surge has moved in the streets of downtown jackson victim. this is the st. john's river. it kreftd over the river waters flowing into the streets this is as millions of people wake up without fire. people are wake up to no electricity, as the mares and governors were passing through, they were urging people to be especially careful today because of the downed power lines, downed debris. in puerto rico, we saw similar aftermaths. people were walking through, seeing things have been completely destroyed around them. then we moved to atlanta. people were opening emergency shelters. we moved to gainesville, people were stranded if their homes. finally in jacksonville, people are looking forward to how they can move through the week ahead without power and water and to not be able to move through these impassable streets. >> bill. >> the st. john's river was ridiculous, it was like trifecta. here we are a day later. they are sitting at what would normally be their record flood level. this shows you how extremely high it was, never seen before by anyone alive in
