which was a national park service site founded by a presidential proclamation in 1935 to commemorate st. louis' role in the westward expansion of the united states. so 12 years after the founding of the park, an architectural competition was held to decide what the memorial itself would look like. and basically, they had about 90 acres of land to work with. 40 city blocks had been torn down, completely razed of all their original buildings to make way for the memorial of the st. louis riverfront. each architect who submitted a design proposal could really do whatever he or she wanted. it could be a huge sculpture, it could be a series of museum buildings. they did want one central feature to be in each of these designs. some people put an obelisk in. some people put a big kind of monolithic rectangular block or something. saaranen decided to go with the idea of an arch. it was only after he kind of designed the arch that he realized, it forms a gateway. so it's really appropriate for the idea of a memorial to st. louis' role in westward expansion. st. louis' role as a gateway to have a giganti

st. louis. police say christopher cadenbach was wanted for domestic violence. saturday afternoon he met his mother and the two boys -- who were 4 and 5 years old -- at a park. while there, officials said he told his mother he "wasn't going to be taken alive." cadenbach then took off in his mother's police and an amber alert was issued. the boys and their father were later spotted in cliff cave park in south county. as officers headed toward them, they heard gunshots. police say cadenbach shot and killed his sons. at this time, it's unclear if cadenbach died by his own gun or by police fire. the investigation is ongoing. and in texas =- authorities say they've found the body of a missing 10-year-old girl. kayla gomez disappeared from a church tuesday night. after four was found saturday in a well next to a relative's home about three miles from the church. authorities say the relative was taken into custody for questioning and is being held in county jail without bail. charges are expected to be filed. a typo on some ballots in arkansas has some voters riled up. in lonoke county -- the form has hillary clinton's first name mis-spelled with an extra "i" in bo

park. in summer of '66 we drove west. we went from chicago to st. louis. >> i became a proofreader for textbook at 13. and then up into idaho and montana and north dakota. so we went to great canyon. we went to mount rush more. then many more recent years i've gone to some of the national parks. he had another house where the african art museum was started that didn't make it into the park service system. and the association for african-american museums had its meeting in roanoke so we visited booker t. and when this conference or the association of african-americans meet, we try to learn about the history of the place. and therefore we went on the montgomery trail and so saw the museum both in selma and midway point where there's an interpretative center. and then, i guess, the most recent part -- site i've been to is right here in richmond. so i got use to going to parks as natural sites, as historic sites and then later as african-american sites i was on the panel a couple of years ago. and the session looked at national parks that weren't designated a
