at this hour, tampa/st. pete/clearwater airports have cancelled. we begin with bill karins, less than 24 hours away from expected landfall what's the latest track of this storm? >> reporter: we're waiting to see how strong this hurricane gets before it makes landfall. all these images visible satellite come in every one minute, this is the center of the storm, this line shows you where it's been, bubbling storms all around it, it's about roughly 125 miles off the coast the storm's starting to be a problem, tornadoes were reported earlier around the nap ls area, and fort myers, heading up toward sarasota, the beginning of those outer bands. still well off the coast and with it the strongest winds. isolated tornado could be the biggest risk. 90 mile per hour winds, on the verge of becoming a category 2 hurricane, that should happen at either 5:00 or 8:00 this evening. it will continue to intensify overnight and bringing itself onshore early tomorrow morning. this big bend area, we're targeting in between tallahassee and gainesville for where it's goi

well as out in pinellas county which is to the west of where we are, that is home to the clearwater st. peterea. as you mentioned, the concern in this part of hillsborough county, the downtown tampa area is the flooding associated with this hurricane. as you noted, we're talking about a storm surge anywhere between 4 to 7 feet and when you take a look at the bay here behind me, you can see it won't take a whole lot of water out here in order for some of the flooding to take place. this time tomorrow, we'll have taken into the account the rain which has already started to fall and as well as high tide and the storm surge. a number of hurricane shelters have opened here in hillsborough county. we're told those can house up to 20,000 people. so right now emergency officials are trying to get folks that live in this part of hillsborough county, which is pretty low lying -- a low lying area. they are trying to get them out of their apartments and condos and homes and trying to get them to hire ground. t flooding concern is not just in the tampa bay area.ground. flooding concern is not just in the

st. pete clearwater airport in the mandatory evacuation zone will shut down at 3:00 p.m.t cancellations are growing ahead of the expected arrival tomorrow. want to bring in pete muntean in washington. what types of disruptions are you expecting? >> reporter: we're only seeing the start right now. faa is monitoring this. held a teleconference just a bit ago. another one scheduled for 6:00 p.m. because this could be a nationwide impact. just checked flight aware. numbers are going up by the moment, about 650 plus delays, 450 plus cancellations. most of those focused on flights to and from tampa, which made a preemptive strike to close the airport at 12:01 a.m. this morning. the executive vice president of operations there held a press conference earlier and he says that the big concern is not only flooding and the storm surge, the airport is relatively close to tampa bay, but also projectiles, things on the ramp could get blown around and they simply want to get airplanes relocated out of there. the concern is not only the workers, there are about 10,000 that work in the ai

the other is just to the west of me, that is in pinellas county, it is home to st. pete as well as clearwater. we are told that there has been some reports of flooding there, right now, laura, this is the worst of the weather that we have seen, although when you take a look at the radar of, of course it explains why it is happening. we have that hurricane that is off to the west of the tampa bay area having, again, spent the better part of a day out here. we were talking to a number of folks who came out to this location and they told us, look, we don't think it is going to be as bad considering how things are right now, so a lot of folks that we came across told us, look, we are not going to evacuate, we're not going to go inland. it's a message that emergency officials really don't want to hear because the concern going into tonight and then tomorrow is that then we are going to start seeing storm surge and so the last thing that emergency officials want our for folks to be complacent and to be out and about thinking that the worst of the storm has passed by, which by
