st. petersburg. jacob rascon for us in st. petersburg. gulf coast to kerry sanders, one of the questions that a lot of people had, the storm came on board in marco island, what's the news there? >> reporter: okay, the fire chief informed us they are out attempted to do some rescues in the area. not on collier avenue but on the south side for anybody that knows the island where the water is three or four feet deep, it is over the mailboxes and there are some people in the homes there. the fire department is in the middle of the backside of hurricane attempting to do some rescues to people as this storm surge is rising. so, what is happening to the south of us is likely happening up here and a little bit of naples, the storm surge is happening ton south side and the fire department despite telling people to not go out and rescuing them, they are heroically out there risking their lives because they decided not to leave. that could be lost of life in the process as it is getting dark and the wind is blowing. >> i was a little surprised given

st. petersburg. florida officials have ordered more than 6.5 million residents to leave their homes, one of the largest emergency evacuations in u.s. history. gov. rick scott is warning the state could get up to 18 inches of rain. according to the associated press, st. petersburg and tampa have not taken a head-on blow from a major hurricane in over a century. these are images across the state of florida. then there is hurricane jose, which is also a category four storm. that storm at the moment is moving away from a string of caribbean islands, a welcome reprieve. with all of this happening, we want to begin with your calls at this hour. we have aligned set aside for florida residents. st. petersburg? we discussed with mayors changes made after hurricane donna and andrew to the point that most new construction is such that it can handle what you have seen. are there particular infrastructure concerns in the city, bridges, dikes, dams you are worried about? >> not so much of that as we have a number of neighborhoods that are really low right at just barely above sea level. even when we get medium to heavy rains there tends to be significant flooding in those neighborhoods. when you take those neighborhoods that are already and historically been at risk and you have the kind of rain we are getting and add high tide and add two to four foot storm surge the impact it will have on these homes is going to be significant. in some ways that is our biggest concern. that is partly why the county that we are in issued an evacuation order as early as they did because we wanted to get people that were in zone as and zone bs out as quickly as we could to put them at minimal risk. you can replace

st. petersburg. what does this mean for folks that live on the west coast of florida. >> that means a possibility of catastrophic events occurring here. we're going to see many impacts from this. not only flooding conditions but storm surge, one of the deadliest components of a hurricane. let's go ahead and get straight to the satellite imagery. the atlantic is active. last time we had three named storms 2010, katia, if you don't know by now, is actually remnants and the biggest storm barreling down on florida, irma. zooming in here the eye of the storm is just tuned 100 miles away from the florida keys. the newest track came out at 5:00 p.m. from the national hurricane center. it takes a little bit to load, it's a lot. here we go. category 3 is what it's at now. here is the thing, the temperature down near the keys, 90 degrees. that is like premium gas for these storms. it's trucking west northwest at 9 miles per hour. it's expected to strengthen as a result of that. then it will head towards landfa

st. petersburg on track for a direct hit. meg oliver, cbs news, miami. that has not happened in nearly a history, that st. petersburg has been the bulls eye for a major hurricane like this. again as hurricane irma slams the the florida keys, it is going to continue pummeling them for hours. it's a slow moving storm. as you can see behind me, the palm trees are practically winding over. we are seeing fallen trees and other flying debris throughout the area. conditions are only expected to get worse. >> thanks. >>> you say you have been out there for hours. what's the biggest concern right now for your area? >> reporter: i think the biggest concern is the flying debris. even though the trajectory of the hurricane is now moving toward the west and up the northern side of the peninsula, this is such a huge storm that when it comes on shore it is going to cover the entire peninsula. you've got flying debris and these high winds. it was really blowing me around when we were on the ground floor. when you step outside, it's dangerous

st. petersburg, clearwater. it has shifted to the east and we feel sorry for our friends and neighbors in orlando, but it makes it a whole lot easier for us. we evacuated our beach communities all along pinellas county yesterday and friday. and they are deserted so we have closed the beach off now. we have people in our evacuation shelters. we're just standing by for the storm to pass through. we're confident. we were looking at a category 4 or category 5 storm. there's a substantial difference between what we were thinking we were going to get and what we're going to -- what's going to happen to us. so we feel blessed even though we know we're going to get some damage. >> we were surprised and had a lump in our throats over marco island and naples earlier today. for folks not familiar, especially with the gulf shoreline in florida, you are on the outer edge, the western edge of tampa bay, the greater tampa bay. what have you been told about timing. when can you relax about the storm surge and assume if it hasn'

st. petersburg. congressman, tell me what the situation is there with your constituents. >> thank you, i appreciate the opportunity to be with you. yeah, here in st. petersburg, it's not bad. we've still got wind and gusts. and an occasional shower still coming through like almost mini bands, if you will, spun off in the very outskirts of the hurricane. and we've got limbs down. a few trees are down. we never did have the flooding. in fact, as you all have been reporting, we have a lot of tampa bay kind of washed out into the gulf of mexico because of the side of the storm that was blowing water out instead of blowing it in. we were fortunate for that. and in the way, it was a blessing to our part of the state. and i was hearing you talking earlier about cuba and the fact that you know, the storm was there for a full day. really did seem to take a lot of the energy out of irma and that really helped our fellow floridians although it looked like southwest florida took it pretty hard down in the naples

st. petersburg area. the extent of the damage here is still unknown. several hundred thousand people here under evacuation orders. we know about 28,000 decided to ride out the storm in shelters and everybody, understandably, very anxious to get out and find out how their homes, their businesses, basically their livelihoods fared during this storm. this was the first hit from a hurricane, a major hurricane that the area has taken in nearly a century. storm surge remains a concern, some two to four feet expected here. tampa bay still under a storm surge warning this morning. and the area here also under a mandatory curfew. emergency vehicles want to be able to get around very easily. but they also don't want people out on the roads quite yet. they haven't tested the structural integrity of bridges. there's a concern of trees down and live wires on the roads. chris? >> nbc sarah dallof, thank you very much. we'll be talking to tampa's mayor a little later when he paraphrased mike tyson that everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face. >> and h
