stacey: thank you so much for joining us. stacey: welcome back to kcci 8 news "close up." joining me is kcci political analyst dennis goldford. thank you so much for coming in. we are less than a month away from the caucus. what will we start seeing here in iowa? dennis: this is the end of the regular season and now we are it really counts now. we will see a lot more of all of these people. i have been wondering for a half a year or so whether in iowa, things have split. who will become the establishment candidate and who will become the more populous candidate? george w. bush startled both of those in 2000 mike huckabee and rick santorum were the more popular in 2012. but we have seen people like christie and k-6 -- kasich and bush, they have spent more time in new hampshire. so i wonder whether iowa will see more of a fight between the populous candidate rather than the establishment candidate. stacey: who needs to win here? dennis: the caucuses are all about expectation. not as well is expected? dennis: right now expectations are up for ted cruz, so i think he needs to

stacey? stacey: well, trump's main rival, texas senator ted cruz, is campaigning in south carolina today. he's now facing a federal lawsuit challenging his eligibility to run for president, because some say he may not be a natural-born citizen. newton: this is the worst-drawn provision in the constitution. it is the most ambiguous provision, and it hasn't been tested in 220 years. now, the time has come to have a case for testing it. stacey: the plaintiff in the case says while cruz is generally accepted to be a natural-born citizen, no court has ever definitively ruled on the question. cruz was born in canada, but his mother was american. now, talk from cruz about "new with some of the city's strongest supporters. sen. ted cruz: everyone understands that the values in new york city are socially liberal, or pro-abortion or pro-gay marriage, focus around money, and the media. stacey: that was cruz in last night's debate. today, the "new york daily news" told cruz to "drop dead," with an image

stacey: commitment 2016. three weeks to go before the iowa caucuses, and it's a two-man race between ted cruz and donald trump. a new bloomberg/des moines register poll out today shows senator cruz at the top with 25% support. trump now has 22% support, but that is within the poll's 4.4 percentage point margin of error. senator marco rubio has 12% support, doctor ben carson has 11%. everyone else is in single digits. senator rand paul at 5%, jeb bush at 4%. new jersey governor chris christie and mike huckabee tied at 3%. ohio governor john kasich and carly fiorina are tied at 2%. rick santorum has 1%. three candidates campaigning in iowa today -- santorum, huckabee and bush. bush says the new poll numbers don't scare him. the former governor of florida spoke to a packed room at the machine shed in urbandale this morning. bush also took a jab at donald trump, saying he's not a republican and doesn't share conservative views. bush went on to discuss the importance of electing a message. mr. bush: 53% of people

stacey: welcome back. writing down the candidate they support, the democratic system is more involved. put simply tomorrow night will , be a game of three corners. steve: iowa democratic party chair doctor andi mcguire joins us now. and when it comes to caucusing you guys are a lot more hands on then republicans. please walk us through the process. dr. mcguire: it is democracy in action. you will have the different candidates talk about how they stand for things into physically and it is a wonderful thing to see democracy, you go of your friends and neighbors and the people that agree with you. and then we have a viability standard. that is 15%, so if a corner does not have 15% of a group, that is not viable. then they can go to the other candidate. it really is a wonderful time to talk about what your vision is for the country and really decide who is the best person to lead us. stacey: we hear a lot about the ground game. that is so important, tell us why. dr. mcguire: you have to get your people to show

stacey? stacey: the third democratic presidential candidate, martin o'malley, is hosting an event tonight in woodbury. steve: campaign volunteers are now ramping up for one final push here in iowa. kcci's rose heaphy is live at the iowa caucus media headquarters in downtown des moines. rose: yes, here at the but i spoke to volunteers, and crunch time. lateresa: hey, this is teresa with dr. ben carson's campaign. rose: campaign volunteers are kicking it into high gear -- the caucus just days away. lateresa: this is like countdown for us. you know, it's like we put as that we need to make it happen. attend the caucus on monday night? and get every pair of boots, or paws, on the ground. sue: we've canvassed. we've done phone calls. i have personally played housemother to the headquarters . we're with the bernie sanders campaign. rose: sue spicer traveled from indianapolis to volunteer. 14-hour days of knocking doors and meeting with voters in iowa was where she felt she needed to be. sue: that i

stacey and steve. stacey: cynthia, thank you. joining us now is kcci political steve: dennis, it was a different debate without donald trump, but for those of us who have heard the speeches quite a lot, it was the same. dennis: this is my job and my profession, this is my 13th month of listening to them, so there's nothing new. but the dynamics were somewhat new, of course, without mr. trump on the stage. ted cruz had a target on his back because he was the only front runner present. he consistently continually wrapped his arms around congressman steve king. marco rubio took a lot of incoming fire because he's trying to emerge as the main alternative to both donald trump and ted cruz. stacey: were you surprised rubio kept bringing up president obama as if he were running against election? den dennis: his whole focus, from his television ads and stumped speeches. there wasn't a lot of thought. they wanted to paint america as an opposition party would do, that the party in power has made a terrible mess of things and we've got to c

stacey: you've seen the videos. some hoverboards that were all the rage for christmas catch fire when people try to ride them. steve: the re-chargable batteries that power the boards can overheat, causing them to bust into flames. well, now one iowa university is warning students who got them for christmas to leave them at home. kcci's kim st onge has at story that's new at 6:00. recently announced that hoverboards will no longer be allowed in residence halls, dining halls, and apartments on campus because of the fire risk. today, i learned drake is considering a similar ban. the brightly colored, self-balancing motorized scooters quickly became the hottest item on holiday wish lists. they're so popular a hoverboard store even opened at valley west mall. >> it's really fun. it's hard at first because you're like, i don't know what i'm doing. kim: drake student haley davis loves riding around the hoverboard her 10-year-old brother got for christmas. but the futuristic scooters may become a thing of the past on colleg

steve: stacey: -- stacey: all 3 democratic candidates will be back on the campaign trail here in iowa tomorrow. most of the republicans are too. rick santorum, carly fiorina, mike huckabee, marco rubio, ted cruz, and john kasich all have events planned around the state. steve: new at 10:00. the new york times is reporting tonight that former iowa hawkeye native tyler sash had cte. sports director andy garman is in now with more on these new findings. andy: tyler's family told the new york times that the super bowl champion had been acting irregularly since moving home after his career ended. his mom told the paper she believed it was due to sash taking powerful medication to combat shoulder pain. but the family agreed to donate his brain to be tested for cte a degenerative brain disease now being linked with concussions in football. the results came back last week. tyler was suffering from the disease. likely a result of numerous concussions he had suffered playing football over 16 years. according to the times, cte is graded on a scale of 0-4 and tyler's brain came back with grade 2,

stacey: cynthia was there. cynthia: it was interesting to see many who came out to see hillary clinton still aren't sure they'll caucus for her. at her get out the vote rally, hillary clinton is reaching out to those still riding the fence. >> those of you still shop, trying to make up your minds, i hop i can intersuede you. cynthia: recent polls show 39% of caucus voters undecided. >> i'm tosh between hillary and bernie but i'm trying to educate myself. cynthia: i asked college-educated students why >> i like what both have to stay, that's what puts men the fence. cynthia: she she likes hillary but is feeling the burn, she likes single payer health care. >> the economy, health care. i'm for universal health care. >> carlos rodriguez likes bernie's free college plan but is leaning toward hillary. >> i think it would benefit a lot of people to have a lower amount of tuition and i think hillary, i like her stance on gay rights. cynthia: on the republican side with a dozen candidates -- >> their stances are so var
