joining me is stacey abrams, author of "our time is now" which is available now in paperback. stacey, it is always great to talk with you. let's talk about what the field hearing that took place today means in practical terms. >> well, first and foremost it is an opportunity to once again set the record straight. there has been an attempt by opponents of s-1 to be, you know, either intentionally reductive or intentionally obtuse. this is about a series of laws being passed across the country starting in georgia to reduce access to the right to vote for inconvenient voters, voters of color, young people, disabled voters, elderly voters, poor voters, but largely targeting communities of color that outperformed in the 2020 and 2021 run-offs here in georgia. >> and, you know, everyone seems to understand that, we think, in the democratic party, which is the party that, you know, is the preferred choice of the majority of voters of color. and yet despite the fact that you have fellow democratic senators in georgia doing a field hearing today, you know, kyrsten sinema is tweeting abo

stacey abrams, senator klobuchar held a roundtable with georgia voters today. most important thing that those voters need to know, these to understand about the obstacles to voting that are being erected by republicans? >> well, again, since 2020, 17 states have passed voter suppression laws, and there are hundreds being entered into 48 states currently. and this is on top of already having fewer voting rights than we have for more than 50 years despite the fact that people have given their lives for the kind of demanding and the expansion of this democracy. so what people need to know is that who is hurt the worst when deny people votes is poor people, low-income people, working people of all races, of all creeds, of all geographies because what happens is that elected officials come into office, are smuggled into office because of voter suppression, that then pass policies that attack the vast majority of people in our society. and what we also know is that people across the board, across party lines, across geography, all are saying that we should actually e

stacey abrams lost. all that hurts voter confidence. what we've tried to do with this is make election management easier for election officials. also, help voters restore confidence that has been hit by both sides of the aisle. >> apparently it hasn't done that. let me get to some of our audience questions. this is a question for you. were there any early indicators of character that people could've identified to help inform their evaluation of people lying about the 2020 election? voters could have clued into it before 2020. what would those have been? you have spoken about the criticality of good character. >> well, i tend to speak with a calm demeanor, a quiet voice, and i'm careful for the words that i use. someone in high office should always do that. i don't think we need to objective five people. i spent time in the general assembly. i was there for two years. i sat next to democrats on my left and my right. we would have conversations. we had respectful conversations. i want to make sure that we always have those conversations.
