we get the latest now from fox 5's stacey cohan live on capitol hill. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this impasse is a great disappointment. super committee was established in the summer with the hope they could reach an agreement, six democrats, six republicans, and now it seems we have failure once again in washington. it's unpredictable how it will affect the nation's credit rating or stock market, but certainly will trigger a round of automatic cuts, $1 trillion in such cuts, supposed to take place in 2013. they'll be split between domestic programs and the department of defense. now the finger pointing begins. >> i think it's illustrated by the last offer made by republicans. our democratic friends said no to that offer because it didn't raise taxes. i think it tells you a lot. and that is that in washington, there's a group of folks that will not cut a dollar unless we also raise taxes. >> we could cut $1.2 trillion and we can do it tomorrow morning, we could put it before the nation, and get this job done. the calculation politically ha

. >> he faced a judge via a video hookup and our stacey cohan is live at the courthouse with the new details. good morning. >> reporter: this was a brief hearing that started at 8:30 at the courthouse in manassas. aaron thomas appeared by video. he was questioned by the judge. first the judge read him the list of charges, which include charges of rape, use of a firearm in commission of a y, a charges. all these charges stemmed from an incident in 2009 on halloween, when he is accused of abducting little girls while they were trick or treating, and raping them. it is what has been described as a brutal and heinous crime. when asked if he understood the charges, aaron thomas looked down, mumbled and said, no. the judge asked what he didn't understand, asked repeatedly, and thomas finally simply asked for an attorney. at that point, judge bailey said, clearly you know enough to ask for an attorney, so he decided to proceed ahead. he assigned him a court appointed attorney and set a hearing for january 25th, that will be a probable cause hearing. we spoke briefly to the prosecutor, and h

stacey cohan, back to you. >>> investigators say frederick scott was one of three men who got into a night in a club back in march. one of the men was shot and killed. scott and another man were charged. november10th, scott posted a $75,000 property bond and was set free. until the error was discovered. >> seems to be a clerical error, possibly through the court system. appears to be no fault of the department of corrections. they were just following the paperwork that was sent over from the courts, allowing him to post the bond. >> police say it's rare that somebody charged with first degree murder is ever allowed bond. the state's attorney now investigating how this happened. >>> detectives are on the lookout for a second robbery suspect accused of preying on college students. this is surveillance video. police say they robbed three george washington university students and a university of maryland student last week. one has already been arrested and charged. >>> dramatic video of a fire in sterling, virginia, hitting an apartment complex there. it broke out about 7:30 sun morning.
