. >> reporter: at standford law school michael romano and his students don't just study justice, they go in search of it. seeking to free those who because of california's three strikes law are serving life sentences for minor crimes. >> his third strike was shoplifting a pair of gloves and a spool of wire from home depot. >> that is one of the inmates ashley nicole davis is helping and another client. >> was arrested, attempting to steal a car radio. >> reporter: california passed its harsh three strikes law in 1994 after the high profile kidnapping and killing of 12-year-old polly klaus by a repeat offender. it was meant to keep serial murders, rapists and child molesters off the streets. but standford's students saw a disturbing pattern. >> not just a handful of people who were sentenced to life. this wasn't the exception, this is the rule there are thousands of people who have been sentenced to life in prison for nonviolent crime. >> reporter: they discovered more than 4,000 such cases says former student emily galvin. >> at every level there had been a prosecutor or a judge who t

. >> rose: the remarkable thing su both went to standford, to harvard law school. >> can't get rid of us. >> rose: is that right? but what is that? you are twins, clearly have the same profession, same educational background, same mother. how close are you? >> we're very close. >> and generally in my life i found that twins do one of two things. either they're very close and stay that way or they try as hard as they can to distinguish themselves from one another. and we're the former. we're just, we remain very, very close, as you said, went to college and law school together. we are both attorneys. we're both in politics. although i have to say that i see what cone less now than i have ever in my life because he's up shuttling back and forth between washington an san an tonio and i have a family now. the biggest way to distinguish is i wear the wedding ring. >> that is how you can tell right now. i don't know what people are going to do when you get married. that is exactly the way they had said to me. the thing you can be sure of the one who is wearing the wedding ring is the mayor.
