the road to paris this time goes through stanford.ned earlier grant fisher won a bronze medal today, but he's not the only stanford alum on that track. no, there are 1010 track and field alums competing. here's nbc's jocelyn moran. athletes who have competed and crossed the finish line on this track at stanford are now in paris, hoping to win a medal that includes 20 year old juliet whitaker, about to begin her junior year. buddy juliet whitaker is digging deep. the americans in the top three. stanford athlete juliet whitaker qualifying for today the 800 meter semifinals in a photo finish just 0.003 seconds separated her, and the fourth place finisher. her reaction and smile after realizing she had qualified. she looked at the wall that we have in our in our hall of fame, and there's a wall of olympians. and she saw that and she said, i want to be one of those people. one day. and sure enough, here she is. dave kiefer has worked at the track and field program at stanford for more than a decade, having the chance to see many olympians

a study revealed by stanford. study released by stanford researchers tracked how smoke from the 2018 campfire up in butte county led to a jump in asthma related emergency room visits among children now in regions affected by all that smoke. researchers found an overall 27% increase in daily er visits by kids with asthma. earlier today on the floor, we spoke with the study's lead researcher, stanford neuroscientist doctor mark carmichael. he says the number of er visits was even greater for children of color. >> saw was that if you lived in an area that had less education, less high school diploma, if you lived in an area that had less home ownership, we saw an increase in asthma exacerbations or asthma ed visits for these patients. and what we also saw was that a lot of the racial ethnic subgroups that have the worst outcomes during a wildfire smoke event were living in these areas. >> according to the research, there was a 95% increase in daily er visits by hispanic or latino children with asthma, 75% increase fo

first for the win and a classy move by stanford alum katie ledecky.mmer won her ninth olympic gold medal in the 800 freestyle and invited, as you see right there, her teammate paige madden to stand with her on the podium. madden won bronze in the race. another big day at the olympics with team usa raking in 18 medals. we have another full day of action ahead. yeah, nbc's liz mclaughlin joins us live from paris. and liz, we saw ledecky team usa just gliding through the water. so give us a sense of what the swimmers are wearing to win these races. so gia terry it's a little breezy here in paris. so i'm wearing a warming jacket that they wear poolside. it's fleece lined about knee length and that helps them maintain their body temperature after they've done these warm ups, including stanford swimmers. torri huske. you know, katie ledecky, we saw them wearing these on the poolside right before they hit the deck for those races, because in this sport, milliseconds matter. but ledecky is pulling away from katie ledecky. battled it out in the 800 meter race.
