stanford university interested -- we got some folks at stanford university interested. all these groups said, "we love this idea." de gates foundation said they were interested in the idea, and we are here because all of that has come together. the notion is simple, and i will not take up much time except to say this -- once a mind is stretched, it never goes back to its original form. if you can create that quality of imagination, you can give kids as young as kids that were just a year, a kindergarten, thinking beyond lunch and beyond recessed and talking about a college education. that has a transformative impact on their lives. do not underestimate the notion of a mind that is stretched. if you cannot think it and cannot see it, you can never necessarily be it, but if you start thinking and talking about things, the remarkable thing about life -- it tends to manifest. the one thing manifesting now is to think about something you can now afford because you have something a lot of families cannot afford. one-half of african-american and latino families do not have acc

here, something that i did recently that would be enlightening in this discussion is i went to stanford university i heard some very big business people talk about what they saw about the world. and they didn't feel the love from obama. the business community feels that it is being vilified and put upon. i think very largely that this is a widely held fear, or feeling. and one of the leaders was steve jervidsen, a venture capitalist. and he said the overarching problem, i'm paraphrasing, is income inequality. this is a venture capitalist. he doesn't particularly want to see an interventionist government policy. but what's happened in the last 20 to 30 years is increasingly a society of haves and have nots. in this recession as you happen to be, as steve jervidsen said, if you speak the lingua franka of technology or biotechnology you're golden. however, if you work with your hands, if you had a service job, if you had a manufacturing job, you've been scrounging. >> so why are the republicans, who are often supported by business, why are they pushing so hard for these continued tax cuts to the weal
