stanley black & decker was a similar situation.ell, anyway, 31 straight points or 66% from the lows of last october. everybody and their mother expected stanley to deliver a fabulous beat and raise. the estimates for home depot and lowe's were going up. you know that's my favorite of the group. and the weather was warmer than usual, resulting in very strong retail sales. so when the company not only failed to beat and raise, but it did miss numbers. earnings in three cents shy, the stock just got crushed, creamed, pulverized. granted, two of those on higher tax rates. and the guidance while impressive, was it enough? was it enough stanley black & decker, much like most -- didn't hold its conference call that night. they waited until the next day, 10:00 a.m. the following day, all sorts of speculation about what really happened? i mean, any information, the company's injudicious policy, and not even before the opening next day made it much easier for people to shoot first and ask questions later. i have to say i'm pretty furious tha

just off the phone with morgan stanley's ceo.ple of highlights from my conversation with her, the company says it is ready for any potential downgrade, that it can sustain any potential downgrade. keep in mind that moody's has suggested that it could cut the company's rating by about three notches. i asked her about an increase in net exposure to france, which was a concern by investors last year. she said it has mostly to do with client activity. the first-quarter strength came across all products and geographies, most importantly fixed income commodities and currency trading was up 34% once you take out dva. she said that was helped in great part by deeper relationships with the company's existing clients and asked whether or not morgan stanley would make a bid for the remaining 49% of the morgan stanley smith barney joint venture brokerage they hold with citi, she said when they submitted their capital plan to the fed, they only asked to buy the 14%, which is what the schedule that was first revealed asked for. this option com

what is your take on morgan stanley's numbers? >> we don't cover morgan stanley but happy to talk about b of a. >> great. >> b of a had a better than expected quarter as your guest mentioned, expectations certainly went up going into the numbers. we had a core number of about 20 cents. the street was about 13 cents. and the beat was pretty much driven by strength in the capital markets during the quarter. >> what about the talk of the mortgage business nearing the bottom? is that good enough? what does that ultimately do for the stock price of bank of america? >> well, you know, it's interesting. b of a with countrywide and growing up as a big mortgage company is actually not as big a mortgage player as it used to be. recall that b of a has sold a lot of mortgage servicing and is simply not as big a player in the mortgage business as it has been in the past. and banks like jp morgan wells, u.s. bank and others have actually picked up the slack. where b of a does benefit from a bottom in housing is b of a is working off a lot of ex
