retired four star general stanley mcchrystal led the u.s. forces in afghanistan and the coalition forces and also the anti-terrorism campaign in iraq before that. he taught a course on leadership at yale university and now he's written a new book about it called "leaders: myth and reality." and, stanley mcchrystal, welcome to the program. >> thanks for having me, christiane. >> you know, it's really good to have you today. a lot of what we've been discussing on a geopolitical level and particularly now with the united states, you know, really implicated in this whole saudi/u.s. relationship, what to do about it. and i'm drawing on your expertise as a leader in the field and now you've written a lot about it. you have said the u.s. has to stand up and say khashoggi's murder is wrong. so what would you advise in a leading policy in that regard in answer to this? >> well, i think a long-term view is very important. one of the things i was reminded when i commanded in afghanistan is we had a 46-nation coalition. most of those other nations that

joining us now is retired general, stanley mcchrystal, and it's great to have you here. >> thank young me, alisyn. >> let's talk about leadership. >> let's do. >> what makes a great leader in your mind? >> let's talk about leadership because we have a crisis of leadership in america and there needs to be a national conversation about it. when we talk about leadership we tend to look for people and what i think we need to do is look in the mirror and decide what we want from leaders. >> let's talk about that specifically, okay? president trump, do you think he's handling -- there's a serial bomber on the loose who is targeting people that president trump has gone after? do you see leadership from the president at this moment? >> i think what we need to decide is what we want from leaders. i personally don't see the leadership that i am looking for. what i am looking for in all leaders, it's something that makes me better than i will be otherwise, somebody that inspires me and teaches me, and somebody who is an example, when i am weak they are strong and when i am angry they are calm.

and now, are rejoining us is four-star retired general stanley mcchrystal.he has a new book called "leaders and myth reality." it is great to see you and again, congratulations on the book. leaders are very much on the minds of voters going into the election at every level, and talk about immigration, and the leadership on the ingrags issue, and -- immigration issue, and why do we need 5,200 troops on top of the national guard troops already there? >> there are terms that the military can do in building the tent camps for sure, but deploying the american military, and the real american military is a symbolic act, and when we do it oopenly and loudly, we are sending some kind of message to a bunch of different groups. i think that we have to be careful of that. i was reading up again this morning in 1932, president hoover sent american military into the united states' capital, the city, to take bonus marchers and drive them out of the city. they had been there trying to get an overdue bonus they had earned in world war i service. it is an ugly picture and tea

"to john lewis and john mccain," it reads, "who remind us that it's possible to keep our humanity while leading with courage and commitment." well, it is possible, but it is not easy. and for this president, it might not even be something that he wants or knows how to do it. i want to get the latest now. authorities here in new york briefed reporters late today. so what have you learned, what is the latest development? >> there have been some pretty significant developments in the investigation, certainly for the fbi. they are now at this sorting site in south florida, they're zeroing in on this site, because they believe, if not all, perhaps most of the packages that were sent came through this site. the other thing, there seems to be a large focus now on the south florida area by authorities looking for leads, trying to figure out if the person who sent these is from the so
