there are about five homes affected by those hazardous chemicals that they found in a home here on stanton in the san pablo. keep in mind, they plan to allow those people who live in those five homes to come back at some point today but it is unclear exactly at what time. i want to walk you through exactly what we know so far because these crews had to move methodically over the last 24 to 48 hours. crews found more than 600 different chemicals and remove more than 800 bottles of hazardous materials from the property here. this process had to be done very carefully as crews not only removed those chemicals but they had to test those chemicals as well and properly dispose of them, even testing them to see how dangerous they were . this is a long process. the shed that was filled with these hazardous materials belonged to a retired chemistry teacher who died roughly 6 months ago. his brother was actually at the home when his brother found all of the items inside the shed while he was cleaning out the property just days ago. >> ranging from explosives to regular chemicals to acids to oxidizer

the home is on the 900 block of stanton avenue near giant highway. the evacuation is impacting a 9 block radius. police and firefighters responded the area earlier report gas in the area at 12, 50, an initial shelter-in-place alert was issued for a hazmat event that was updated to an evacuation order from the contra costa county community college warning system around 4.30. the homeowner was at the home, but his brother was there and was cooperating with emergency responders. officials from con fire say residents in the area should evacuate contra costa community college gymnasium. that's at 2600 mission bell drive. they should park in lot 6 and the red cross is there. helping residents, residents can bring their pets, but they're asked not to bring too many things that can stay there for up to 24 hours. and like i said, the red cross is there to help all of these people as officials continue to work in this space. we also have richmond, fire department and the san pablo police department was also here working on this situation, keeping everyone out
