marin austin has more from the staples center. what's the mood like now? >> reporter: just to put it in speck for you, it is the middle of the night here in los angeles, and fans and mourners are still outside the staples center paying respects to kobe bryant and his daughter. meanwhile, the investigation continues into how exactly that helicopter went down. federal investigators are painstakingly examining the massive debris field outside los angeles where the helicopter carrying kobe bryant, his daughter gianna, and several others went down sunday. >> a piece of the tail is down the hill on the left side of the hill. thse is over on other side of that hill. >> reporter: the helicopter took off at 9:06 a.m. headed for a basketball tournament in nearby thousand oaks when it ran into thick fog. >> two echo x-ray, you're still too low level for a flight following at this time. >> reporter: the pilot did not signal distress but told traffic controllers he was climbing to avoid a cloud layer before slamming into a hillside. >> we'll be looking at other avionic

fans gathered outside the staples center in los angeles. the site of so many of bryant's great athletic moments to celebrate his life and career. aviation sources tell nbc news officials are looking closely as whether weather had something -- dense fog may have contributed to the incident. let's bring in nbc's steve patterson who has been covering the crash. steve, as you've been on the scene all day, the last briefing that you know so well. the sheriff was saying the faa was on location. i was just mentioning how the ntsb is on its way and the coroner was also on its way. what's the latest? >> reporter: in fact, there were some coroner vehicles that were spotted in the vicinity here, richard, as well as a bulldozer, which is just over my right shoulder. we've seen a lot of equipment as the first responders, authorities and crews now, along with investigators are really swarming the scene. the official word, though, will come from, as you mentioned, the ntsb, the federal authorities, which are, as you mentioned, again, on the way at this po
