we have lisa stark on the telephone from washington d.c. lisa, anything you can add to this?> well, i've been listening. i think you guys - alan has been hitting it on the head. the idea, if they do, in fact, have objects from the aircraft. that would be - you know, an amazing feat. investigators have long thoughts in the last few days that the aircraft took the southern route. that has been a key suspicions. they didn't believe it had flown to the north. they pinned their hopes on finding something in the area. if they have found something, obviously that will bring all of the attention to this part of the ocean, but it's been, what, 12, 13 days, and there'll have to be a lot of analysis because if they fined debris -- find debris, the tides have taken it, the winds have taken it, doesn't mean the wreckage is near the debris, and they'll have to backtrack and do an analysis to figure out where the aircraft itself would be. >> lisa, i want to mention, we are expecting a briefing from the australian maritime safety authority, and i don't have the exact time. justin, you may be

lisa stark is live in washington, d.c. what kind of support the u.s.roviding to help find the plane? >> it is a huge involvement. the u.s. has two naval destroyers in this area. they are searching the waters, and there is a pc3 oh ryan plane overhead at well. >> lisa what can you tell us about those stolen passports and the men who used them to board the flight? >> there was certainly a lot of concern when this came out that two passengers had boarded the flight with stolen pass ports they bought one way tickets both from the same travel agency in thailand. their photos have been released and now interpol says it has identified them. they are both iranian. they believe there is no connection with terrorism; that they were trying to get to europe on these passports to seek asylum there. >> and if terrorism now seems unlikely what can you tell us about those two black boxes on board the plane? >> it is critical to find these black boxes. it can withstand 3400 times the force of govry. if they are under water they will release a pinging noise ever 30 seco

"america tonight"'s lisa stark who has covered a number of air disasters joins us this hour. lisa the latest evidence suggests that perhaps this wasn't an accident, not a catastrophic mechanical failure as we talked about in the beginning. why is the credit evidence pointing in that area now? >> well, joie, evidence points everything on the table, which is a good idea expect but even you with without the wreckage, without black boxes, the information seems to indicate this is something of a slibt attack. they have two -- deliberate attack. the information on the plane's altitude and its location, the other system that sends the information on how the mechanics of the plane are doing, the engines and the other on board mechanics on the system, those systems were shut down, not at exact same time, at different times. then of course there was no radio contact after about 1:30 in the morning about 40 minutes into the flight. and then it appears from radar data and from other data from satellite information in the area that the aircraft made this turn and stayed flying. all of the

lisa stark is in washington d.c., and lots of talk now that this may have been foul play. what do we know about that? >> well, del, i should caution that i've been involved in covering many investigations where some piece of information changes, and then the whole premise changes. but right now, based on what investigators know, it does seem that this is very suspicious. that foul play could likely be involved. we have two systems on the plane, the one that sends outdata on where the plane is located and the one that sends out engine performance data, both of those systems apparently went dark, and yet the plane continued to keep flying, and that's based on signals from the plane that were picked up by satellite. so the question is, was this a hijacking? was it a rogue pilot? malaysian officials were asked about that at this morning's news conference. >> there are four or five possibilities. it could have been done intentionally. it could have been done under duress, it could have been done because of an explosion, and that's why we don't want to go into the realm of specu

lisa stark reports. >> we are six days in and no sight of the aircraft. concerns about whether it could have been a deliberate act. there's so many strange things going on with the aircraft. first the transponder stopped working - why was that. did someone turn that off deliberately. it sends information back about the plane's location and altitude. after it dropped off radar, it appears that were signals, possibly from devices monitoring the electronics and the engines. they were picked up by at least two satellites. if they were coming from the plane, it indicated that the engines were turning, the aircraft in the air after it dropped off the satellite, after it dropped off the radar. that's why the search is expanding out to the indian ocean. u.s. investigators looked at the pinging data from the satellites and says it appears that the plane may have gone out west towards the indian ocean, the u.s. navy using a destroy in the area. the uss "kidd" into that region to look for wreckage, it's a huge area, but a big mystery, and a lot more questions than a

i want to go to lisa stark, joining us from washington. we talked about china and the satellite images that turned out to be nothing. how significant do you think the announcement is, coming this morning? >> if you remember, there was a lot of confusion about the chinese images, and china said they never released them and at some point it seemed it may have been a hoax. this is more credible, according the to australians. they have had experts look at the satellite images. they didn't show the media what the images looked like or describe them particularly, except to say there were at least two objects. and during the news conference, the maritime authority in australia indicated that - seemed to indicate there may be additional objects seen, but the two main ones, one about 79 feet long, so a good size, actually. but, again. they are being cautious. they say this is the best lead they have had so far. they have been very clear that they've been down this road before with other investigations, and unfortunately you get to a point where you
