barbara starr, i want to talk to you at the pentagon.ng today, telling congress how woe handle afghanistan if, in fact, he is confirmed as the next secretary of defense. what is he saying today (well, right now, he is walking a pretty fine line. at this hearing this morning, he talk about the need for not rushing, not rushing for the exit doors in afghanistan, sort of hinting that he would go with the general notion around the pentagon of a modest troop reduction, though he didn't use those words but then he talked about supporting the president's idea of significant troop reductions. he even used general petraeus's favorite words, that progress in afghanistan is fragile but reversible. so a pretty typical cop fir nation hearing, walking the line, not trying to offend democrats or republicans, getting himself confirmed. they don't come to the pentagon. i guess women find out what he really thinks. we know he was talking about afghanistan, as you mentioned. also reading, talking about cyberattacks,et, did he outline what his priority once

our pentagon correspondent, barbara starr, joining us.alk about a final slam against the alliance. >> well, yeah, you could say that, keir yra. bob gates is on that farewell tour scheduled to leave office at the end of this month. he is getting more and more candid as that deadline gets closer. he was speaking in brussels talking about a long-standing issue that rubs the u.s. the wrong way, which is how much the u.s. is contributing to nato versus hoch oth versus how much other countries are contributing to nato. let me quote from him directly. he says, quote, in the past i have worried openly about nato turning into a two-tiered alliance. what's the secretary really talking about here? look, nato and the u.s. have bickered for the last 20 years about who is doing enough. but right now, it couldn't be more sensitive, because when leon panetta walks into the pentagon to be the next secretary of defense, the day after gates leaves, he still needs nato. he needs the nato commitment in afghanistan. he needs the nato commitment for the operati

dan lothian is at the white house and pentagon correspondent barbara starr is in new york.an, let's go ahead and start with you. when we look at these withdrawal numbers, what do you think? big enough for a public that has grown pretty impatient? >> reporter: well, yeah, impatient and tired of the conflict. no doubt for many of the numbers. you take a look at the polling, the majority of americans oppose the war in afghanistan, 62% in the most recent polling numbers, compared to 10%, less than that last month. and when it comes to withdrawing the troops from afghanistan, the majority of americans think all of the u.s. troops should be withdrawn. 39% saying that. so what the president will do tonight is point out to americans that the u.s. effort there has yielded some successes, that progress is being made. he'll point to the fact that the fight against al qaeda, finding some success there, they are reversing the momentum against the taliban, and that the government of afghanistan has been stabilized. but this will certainly be a strong sale that the president has to make t

here's cnn's barbara starr. >> reporter: cnn has learned that u.s. strike near kismayo in southern somalia last week, part of a new secret joint pentagon and cia war against a terrorist group the u.s. believes is targeting europe and the united states. the pentagon hit a stronghold of al shabaab, a somali-based al qaeda affiliate now in the u.s. crosshairs. u.s. military and cia personnel have gone to somalia secretly in recent months gathering intelligence and meeting key somali contacts, according to two u.s. officials. cia director leon panetta acknowledged covert operations in both somalia and next door yemen. >> we are doing that in yemen. it's obviously a dangerous and uncertain situation, but we continue to work with elements there to try to develop counterterrorism. we're working with jay sock as well in their operations. same thing is true for somalia. >> reporter: joint special operations command, the same covert military unit that killed osama bin laden. retired officer led missions to somalia in the 1990s. it's still a dangerous place for

barbara starr is live at the pentagon this morning with more. hi, barbara. >> good morning, kiran.noyed or upset if our e-mail or twitter accounts are hacked. the pentagon is way beyond that. now the pentagon's been considering the use of military force, military force, to retaliate against a cyber attack from another country. that's why yesterday when leon panetta testifying to become the next secretary of defense, talked about all of it, it caught our ear here at "american morning." have a listen. >> said that there's a strong likelihood that the next pearl harbor that we confront could very well be a cyber attack, that cripples our power systems, our grid, our security systems, our financial systems, our governmental systems. this is a real possibility in today's world. >> so if panetta gets confirmed, as is expected as secretary of defense, what's on the table is the possibility of cyber attacks being considered an act of war by the pentagon. pretty heavy stuff if they decide to go down that route. of course the big problem is, if they are cyber attacked they have to figure out

let's bring in our pentagon correspondent, barbara starr. what is going on?, look, it's been the plan that u.s. troops would be out of iraq by the end of this year but suddenly maybe not. at his confirmation hearings, the cia director, leon panetta, started talking about the circumstances under which u.s. troops, if the iraqis request it, which they think he will, the circumstances under which they might stay in iraq nor some period of time. he had quite an interesting exchange about all of this with senator john mccain, the ranking republican, on the senate armed services committee. have a listen. >> if prime minister malaki requests that we maintain a presence there, that ought to be seriously considered by the president. >> do you think it would be in our interest to do that, given the situation? >> senator, i have to tell you, there are a thousand al qaeda. we saw the attack made just the other day. it, too, continues to be a fragile situation and i believe that we should take whatever steps are necessary to make sure that we protect whatever progress we'

let's go right to our pentagon correspondent barbara starr. she's learning more about iran's efforts in syria. what's going on here, barbara? >> reporter: well, wolf, cnn is now learning some of that new emerging evidence, a u.s. official tells us that they now have secret communications, intercepts between iran and syria that show iran's meddling with this unfolding violence that has gone on for so many weeks now inside of syria. what the u.s. believes is this is iran's strategy. get involved in the syrian situation, back a number of regime elements, just in case al assad falls, iran wants to be able to maintain its influence inside syria, which as you know, it basically considers a satellite state. so we now know that there's communications intercepts that the u.s. has that show evidence of this. the state department hasn't been very public just yet about the specifics. listen to a little bit of what they had to say about all this. >> in terms of evidence, it's difficult for me to talk about a lot of that evidence from the podium. i would ju
