barbara starr, what do we know? >> good morning. pentagon believes overnight strikes in syria killed a man named david drew drugeon. pose ag direct and imminent threat to the united states. drugeon was a key bomb maker. as a french jihadist he had the ability to run fighters in and out of syria and back to europe. that's one reason why he was so important. the pentagon hadn't talked a lot about the khorasan group since september 22nd. they didn't get the key leaders then, but they had been on the lookout for them constantly, these five air strikes overnight, what they really tell us, because there were such a small number, so surgical, so precise, they had pretty good intelligence, they believed, about where these guys were. drugeon apparently hit by a u.s. aircraft, maybe a drone, maybe a fighter jet while he was traveling in a vehicle. so they were very much aware of where they believe he was. at this point they believe they got him. is it absolutely 100%? no. they don't have the body. they don't have the photographic evidence. bu

let's go to barbara starr with the latest. >> reporter: u.s. boots back on the ground in anbar province, i don't think most military personnel thought that would ever happen but here we are. about 50 troops landed at al assad air base in anbar, one of the sites of some of the bloodiest fighting for u.s. troops during the iraq war. why are the 50 troops there? basically they're doing something very technical, a site survey. but a site survey so more u.s. troops and u.s. advisers can go in and start training the iraqi forces to go on the offense. this is the goal now, get iraqi forces back out in the field on the offense in key areas, especially anbar province. this is an isis stronghold. it is the western approach to baghdad. it is becoming a matter of some urgency to push isis back -- further back towards syria. and president obama making very clear this is the strategy now. get the iraqis to go on the offense, get them to push isis away from the key crucial areas, the capital and other areas in iraq. >> why is it so tough to pin down the fate

ofing the third annual state the schools address, superintendent joshua starr made no mention of the recent disturbing allegations. last week, abc 7 news was the first to tell you that a contractor and baker middle school allegedly inappropriately touched two middle school students. the district says they were unaware of the past offenses. yesterday we told you about another incident involving a substitute teacher allegedly assaulting a 12-year-old girl. incidents, authorities were immediately notified, but parents did not find out until weeks later. >> there are concerns. the situations have brought to light the fact that we need to tighten up our procedures when it comes to communicating. was aacknowledges there lack of communication between school officials and parents, and there will be a mandatory meeting in a few weeks between principals and teachers to discuss the proper protocols to follow with these kinds of incidents. thank you. parents will also get a chance to ask questions about the recent accusations that students were inappropriately touched. officials will be grilled

barbara starr has more on the details. what can you tell snus. >> jake, you mentioned the al nusra front and the u.s. says it was not targeting the al nusra front. it was targeting the khorasan group and now they do believe they got their man. the u.s. put together critical intelligence about where this man, french jihadist, david drugeon, might be riding in a vehicle in northern syria. after tracking him, a u.s. drone fired a missile striking drugeon's car. officials believe he was killed but they are still trying to confirm that. drugeon was a key leader in the khorasan group, a cell of operatives who moved to pakistan. the u.s. called him an imminent threat. >> the united states has very good intelligence about the movements of khorasan operatives, particularly of the drugeon. they either have a guy inside the group or near the fringes of the group or they were able to pick up specific electronic transmissions indicating their movements. >> drugeon was believed to be working on bombs that could potentially get past airp

our correspondent, barbara starr, joining me on this thanksgiving. barbara star, what more do we know? >> reporter: well, brooke, one of the questions being asked now, why these types of targets, embassy vehicle, other organizations in kabul. you know, is the taliban looking for a new set of targets now that the military force is downsizing there? in fact, by the end of the year, in just a few weeks, the u.s. is expected to only have only about 10,000 troops in afghanistan. nato troops pulling out, the combat mission, if you will, essentially over to large extent by the end of this year. so what are the taliban up to? these horrific attacks, many people will tell you, are part of the taliban strategy to destabilize the country. they -- they're not going to get afghanistan back under their control, as they had it so many years ago, but if they can destabilize the security mirp situation, if they can make the afghan people question if their own government can protect them, that's the kind of destabilization where the taliban thrives and where they do b

barbara starr has more now on the confusion and what it means for the fight against isis. >> reporter: confusion about the fate of the elusive leader of isis. iraqi tv broadcast a statement. that baghdadi was wounded on the border with syria. a senior u.s. official tells cnn the iraqis did have intelligence that he was in that border town. u.s. officials now believe it's less likely he was wounded or killed 250 miles away from mosul where coalition airplanes hit a convoy of trucks. rumors surfaced that baghdadi was there. they targeted a meeting of isis leaders, but the outcome was unclear. stanley mcchrystal questions what good it would do. that is not, that's not going to stop isis. >> no, i think it's something that causes isis problems, but it's not cutting the head off the snake and expecting the snake to die. >> reporter: the u.s. is now scouring phone intercepts, reports from locals on the ground, anything confirming intelligence that he may have been wounded or killed. the war against isis still is far from over. >> it will morpmorph. these are very conventionally trained, ver

barbara starr is live for us at the pentagon on this one. barbara, that video is really alarming.y as alarming? >> reporter: well, what u.s. navy and military officials are telling us is this video is appalling, disturbing. but they don't believe it really reflects the relationship between the american people and the people of turkey and the two governments. turkey, of course, a nato ally, u.s. navy warships call at turkish ports all the time. that's what was going on there. these three sailors were on shore leave. make no mistake, a lot of concern here, there is a group that's identified itself as the turkish youth movement. they're not associated with isis or with al qaeda. but plenty of concern, obviously, that they can launch this kind of attack on the street. now, u.s. officials are working with the turks to identify the individuals and to see what exactly did happen here. very concerning that these three young american service members got attacked in this way and the bags over their heads and everything. but what i'll tell you is navy officials that have looked at this, they
