barbara starr is at the pentagon following the developments. >> here is where it stands.e investigation looking into this. the fbi looking at whether there's criminal activity, the c anchts. >>> trying to determine what it lost and how it lost it. all possibilities on the table. could it have been an employee inside the cia, could it have been a contractor, some outside hacker that somehow got in, a state actor. a lot of people speculating, pure speculation. could it have been russia or another state actor, someone overseas. getting a lot of attention because this is old deals with the ability of the intelligence service to hack in to common devices that we all have, our phones, computers, televisions. the cia not officially commenting on this, but, in fact, reminding people it has the legal authority to collect this kind of intelligence overseas against foreign targets. that's what they say their reason for doing all this was. if wikileaks posts the computers codes on how to undertake this activity, there could be disastrous things over sea, maybe even the united states.

i want to go to barbara starr at the pentagon, what are you hearing? >> reporter: one of the big questions, the u.s. got a lot of intelligence, but was any intelligence valuable enough to start act upon and we now know that yes, it was. cnn has talked to a number of u.s. officials who say one of the things they got in this raid is they grabbed a lot of electronic data including hundreds of potential contacts of al qaeda operatives and sympathizers, some outside the middle east, some in the west and they are now beginning to take action to try to track these contacts down, find these people either through their e-mails, online presence or any way they can because they believe there be may al qaeda sympathizers out there involved in planning additional attacks, this is why -- the raid, they said they had to conduct, they knew there was intelligence there. they grabbed multiple terra bites of data, they are working through it, they also believe they have additional intelligence about al qaeda safe havens, targeting, training, explosive manufacturing, how

let's go to the pentagon, barbara starr is there with more.hn mentioned, what they're calling continued activity at these sites. what does this mean? >> reporter: well, good morning. if you thought the weekend firing of four extended range firing of scud missiles is a problem, we're in for more. u.s. officials are seeing signs of continued activity at the north korean underground nuclear test site, where north korea has several times tested a nuclear device underground. they're seeing signs of activity under the surface. they're not sure what it means but they're telling me it's similar to what they've seen in the past right before a test. you can bet u.s. satellites have their eyes trained on that underground nuclear test site. separately from that, they're also seeing signs of continued activity at other missile sites above ground, things like engine tests and other preparation activity for possible additional missile launches. that would be no real surprise. north korea's missile program is growing. they're having more and more success in t

however, received an e-mail from walter starr who you may know is the author of a recent book on william henry stuart and presently is working on a book on edwin stanton. well, he insists that it's much more complicated than that. what he discovered was that sherman also took and sent some of the surrender terms to some southern newspapers. for example, "the columbia, south carolina phoenix" of april 24, 1865, and that newspaper quoted it as saying that this peace treaty would bring peace to all the united states and the confederate states. sherman believed that he was exactly doing what should have been done. so it's possible that he may have sent information or planted information in a newspaper to put pressure on the administration to accept the terms. the problem is, however, that he never said anything about it, nor did anyone else say anything about such plans until walter starr found this information. so i think you have to say it's just difficult to know for sure but we wanted you to be aware of that. we do know, however, without any fear of contradiction, that sherman thought he

barbara starr has details from the pentagon. >> reporter: one of the most widespread allegations thatu.s. air strikes this month in mosul, iraq may have caused up to 200 or more civilian deaths. wi what the u.s. military is saying is that they are aware of the allegations from social media, from activist groups, from iraqis. and they are looking into it. this was in west mosul, herly populated. there were a number of air strikes over recent days. there have been social media reports and videos emerging of civilians killed in the area. the u.s. military says it was bombing in that area, but it is trying to really get fidelity, did it bomb these buildings, were civilian casualties caused. they are also looking in about to a recent strike near a mosque. civilians said to be killed there. they are look into yet another case of a school building bombed north of raqqah, syria. more than 30 civilians were seeking shelter in that building it is said, they are looking into those allegations as well. no final answer on any of these, but a number of investigations now under way and the u.s. mili
