barbara starr has more. >> reporter: less than 24 hours after defense secretary mark esper was fired by president trump, more changes at the pentagon. the top policy chief, a man named james anderson resigned. essentially he was told to resign. he is now replaced by anthony tato, a retired brigadier general who was roundly criticized for a series of tweets that abdicated conspiracy theories and were anti-islamic. he's in charge of the policy shop along with the acting secretary now chris miller, who is a former special operations soldier and a bureaucrat but had not served in senior positions for some time, although he did head the counter terrorism center. one of the big concerns at the pentagon now is what comes next. miller has a lot of expertise in counter terrorism. not at all clear that is what is needed here. still, the effort, the policy effort, is to try to push back against china and russian expansionism and to try to get the defense budget of more than $700 billion through congress. whether an acting secretary with little experience can get that job done remains to be seen

let's get right to barbara starr live at the pentagon. what have you learned?> at this hour the pentagon trying to determine exactly what has occurred here and that's why they're being very specific with this language of these very first reports. u.s. personnel involved. they are trying to get a firm understanding of what exactly may have occurred, whether any u.s. personnel have indeed been injured or killed. they are not able to confirm that to the news media at the moment. u.s. -- what are u.s. personnel doing in sinai? well, this dates back to the 1979 peace accord between egypt and israel, a multi-national observer force was established and the u.s. has been part of that force in sinai ever since then. now, back in 2016 u.s. military personnel moved deeper into southern sinai because of militant activity that they had been on the receiving end, rocket attacks, that kind of thing, from their original positions near the egyptian/israeli border. so they moved south back in 2016 and they started using remote technology, cameras, that sort of thing so they didn

let's go to barbara starr at the pentagon now.ave new reporting that the trump administration is monitoring these events closely. what can you tell us? >> well, boris, make no mistake, officially there's no word from the trump administration or the israeli government and the rauns already accusing the israeli, but the trump administration is monitoring all of this carefully. we know from sources we have spoken to. what typically happens in these cases is they'll start looking at intelligence threads, communications, imagery to see if there are clues about exactly what happened and any clues perhaps more importantly about what may come next. big question, of course, will the iranians begin to plan for some type of retaliation. for the u.s., we know that president trump in the tick down of his days in office has raised the question of whether or not the u.s. could strike iran's nuclear program, strike at iran at all. he has been told by several officials what there would have to be is clear, imminent provocation by iran against the
