that will not happen for a while but they want to use starship to send their next generation starshipinto orbit. the goal is to use this as a lender for the nasa artemis program to land people on the moon and eventually to send humans to mars someday. it really is going to be the crux of spacex's business plan moving forward. caroline: one which might be helped with the fact that elon musk is close to president-elect trump, who might be there to view all of this. loren: right. caroline: what is the next technological feat? loren: so glad you asked. as impressive as the test flights are, there is still quite a long way to go. to get to deep space destinations, for instance, starship has to refuel in orbit. that is something that has never been done at this scale before. so essentially what they have to do is launch starships and launch multiple back-to-back starships that will dock in orbit and refuel, kind of like filling up at the gas tank over and over again. once it has enough fuel, they can go onto the moon and mars but that is still a while away and they need to perfect this boos

starship's booster is supposed to catch, but it didn't.se kirsch is following this story from miami. what happened? >> reporter: hey, yeah, we already saw this once and frankly it's a remarkable sight. last month more than 20 story tall booster from spacex, part of the starship program, was caught at the launch tower that was supposed to happen again when we saw the sixth test flight for starship yesterday. you see the takeoff there. that didn't happen. in the middle of the flight we heard on the broadcast from spacex that they were diverting and instead opted for a controlled landing into the batter. you can see the landing as it unfolds there. and so that wound up happening. they didn't meet all the criteria they needed. we heard from the spacex broadcast that they were trying to put the spaceship in situations that were explicitly challenging to see how it would react to the challenges. they were trying to test the limits of this spacecraft. starship is the way that spengs is hoping to send americans to the moon again and potentially al

to put starship into orbit and leave it up there for a while. so far, we've been lobbying it up there and even today we're going to leave it up there. and whether or not the engine fires, it's going to come back down but in the future, if we want to keep it up there, we need to be able to light the engines and bring it back in a controlled fashion. and what spacex wants to do is when they catch starship, just like they catch the booster. >> what are the challenges with igniting that engine while in space versus closer to earth? >> so this these engines, these raptor engines are what we call a staged combustion engine. they're very similar to the engines that we had on the space shuttle, although they work with different propellants and they're complicated engines. they're finicky little beasts and it's not so easy to light them up and shut them down and light them up again and on the space shuttle, we used a hypergolic engine and orbital maneuvering system engine which is a much more simple design. it's two liquids that once they touch, they aut
