so we're a start-up accelerator for clean tech. we're trying to make start-ups that are focusing on renewable energy and energy efficiency more success. there's four pieces of that. there's funding. we make an investment somewhere between $20,000 and $100,000 in each. we're a combination of a small venture firm and start-up academy bolted together. we then introduce the start-ups that are in the program to other investors to help them raise more money from great investors to move forward. the second piece of the program is mentoring. so me, dylan mcdonald, dave graham, the three partners here, we've been starting companies since our early 20's. we've had some really nice successes. we've had some failures and have learned from both. there's a lot of wisdom and knowledge that we want to help impart to the companies going through the program. it's not about us. we're here and full-time and all in on it, but there's another 35 mentors and growing that are breathing life into what we're doing. these are highly accomplished entrepreneur

people started day fund, they started to collect money out there. that was just the beginning. we got a call from somebody asking, is dpw doing this? we said yes. i have $50,000, i will support it. we are a private group. this is not tax deductible. we do not care. and they rebuilt some houses. the problem with most people is they could not even teardown their homes. but this is the burning man twist. i love telling this story. being who they were, the culture, at the end of each day, the landscape was strewn with debris. you have to seeing the pictures. they gather up the debris, at night, they turn it into a bonfire. that is part of our culture. then locals started to come around and one woman said, i have never seen anything like this. i have never seen anything like this, but i like it. pretty soon, they were making art. fema is not going to do that for you. and that was just a spontaneous effort. now it has expanded around the world. this came out of burning man, this wild, crazy party. >> let us start over here with a question. >> i would like to ask a question about dpw.

he started his first term this january. we are going to get to know him and talk about the issues facing the city. welcome. thank you for joining us today. tell us about your background, where you grew up, went to school, and what kind of jobs to have had. >> i grew up in the philadelphia area, in new jersey. i went to school up and down the east coast. i went to undergrad at duke university. i went to law school at harvard. after clerking for a judge, i came out here in 1997. i have been here for the last 14 years. i have always lived in the castro. i am an attorney. i started out in private practice. i settle private law firm during complex commercial litigation. in 2002, and moved over to the sentences the city attorney's office where i worked on the trial team doing trials for the city, handling my own cases, and supervising a team of attorneys as well. >> why did you choose to live in san francisco? >> i always assumed i would go back to the philadelphia area since that is where my family is. i was always interested in

how do we start with carville? well, we start with the building material, essentially. how does carville get started? it starts with when old forms of public transportation become obsolete. now, the earliest forms of public transportation were omnibuses, which were really large coaches pulled by horses. but in the 1860's people came up with the new idea, the horse car. a horse car was essentially a little car that horses could pull but it used rails, on the ground. rails reduced traction. so horses could pull larger loads. horse cars really started taking over all across the united states in the 1860's, but they had some draw backs as you might imagine. can anybody think of something that could be a bit of a problem with horses pulling cars? yes. well, for one thing, horses were living animals and they could get sick. so some industries, some companies, lost thousands of horses to disease, which was just terrible for business. the other thing is a horse can drop up to 10 pounds of fecal matter on the street every day. so you're talking about up and down market street, t

we have started the cdsm shoring wall. the excavation and bracing work in the construction of bridges started in the first and second quarter of next year. that is the progress made so far on the area. the cdsm wall completed is the yellow area. the c blue the keydsm wall that is under way. the green is the pre trenching. and the buttress area is ready for the start of that work. these are some shots of the ongoing pre-trenching effort. piles that to be removed in front of the shoring wall installation. cdsm operation in his own four, which is now nearly complete, with just the beale street were to finished. it creates a lot of mud. and the equipment has been mobilized. there is the rotator on the right. one of the two rotators that will be on the project. and the crane setting them up and assembling the equipment. as far as, to give you an update on quality control, the instrumentation has been put in place. the shoring wall, and that is the drill rig on the left. it is to monitor any potential for movement, as well as ot
