states in october of 1951. things one of the nice about working in the library is that we have a lot of artifact and photos andocuments and you can put the whole thing together and tell all of this story altogether, which goes along with one of the hacks we have over here. this is a hat we did not originally know all about. we have no idea what event she might have worn it at and it is write a hat. in the process of going through ms. truman's papers, we located a letter she had written. this is a handwritten draft of a letter she would've given. she says, i am simply delighted with my hat! i am happy it is mine. she said she wore it at one of the most important occasions queen juliana was here and had many things said about it. when we read that letter, we realized we had photos of that event. we can look back and know what hat she wore. we would look through the photos and found a good one of her where you can see what she is wearing and then we took the photo and compared it to one of the half in our collection and realize we have the hat and it is nice to connect the documents to the artifact and tell the w

library contacted me and said they were getting threats. should we go on with this? i said, look, you can do whatever you like. but i think in the united states if we cannot have a civil discussion in a library where else can you do it in the rest of the world? so we got a lot of security. went down there, and it was mayhem. chaos. people wanted to shut the whole thing down. as you can tell it was a misunderstanding. it just touched the wrong nerve. going into the room. the room is about this size, packed to the gills with folks. and i give my presentation. and then i told everyone we are definitely going to be addressing the issue everyone wanted to hear. i go through the slides of cartoons of controversy that have been done over the years and i bring about that cartoon. you can imagine it was like a bad movie people started passing out. oh, my god. it was something else. but i did i said, look, every person who has something to say and wants to say it in this room, will have an opportunity to say it. i will stay here until next week if we are quiet to make sure i hear those voices. of course it did a wonderful thing both to let the air out

can't sit here in this place did not acknowledge the national public library, which was early -- we are not just to throw here for the statecap over so much of this has had good, that this institution and ken oliver and his staff were so helpful and my research for the book. this is nonfiction. it may read the novel, the police may come, you can't make this stuff up. the folks in the nashville room who hoped he would find the old newspaper clips and photos. the tennessean has their own photo archive at 1100 broadway. all of its workers are here in the nashville public library. just at the end of the nashville room. political cartoons and photos. so i just want to say that. why did i write the book? i think i wrote the book for two reasons. one is this involves a situation, telling the story. it happened in our city and not too far from where we're sitting today, that it never happened before anywhere in our kanji. anywhere and any state in america and it never happened since. this is a one-of-a-kind thing. i gripe is gail did as a newspaper reporter. i like to tell a good story. the struct is a pretty darn good yarn i hope
