my answer on what is the state of the union is, the state of the union is fair and balanced. i don't mean that in quite the same sense, i think the single most important fact about today versus a year ago is that the democrats took over the house of representatives and we've already seen, in the first weeks of the year, in the shutdown, how important that is . and as we go forward it's important to realize not only is nancy pelosi the speaker but that because senate rules that will require 60 votes for almost everything, not judges. but chuck schumer in alliance with nancy pelosi can multiply, a force multiplier and when schumer and pelosi stick together, they can have quite a lot of influence but we could take more about that because the shutdown fight leaves democrats united and republicans in much less united and it's there how democrats are gonna proceed then how republicans are and we talk more about that as we go on. i've always loved these things, it shows you what a weird kid i was. i like them one i was a teenager. the reason i like them is because they require a pres

the rest of his first term. just what are the expectations for tonight's state of the union address and the democratic response? that, we sent reporters all over this country to talk to voters about how they feel about the state of our union. gabe gutierrez is along the u.s./mexico border. rehema ellis is in atlanta. gabe, i'll start with you there along the border. the wall. it's more than likely to be quite the focus of the president's address tonight. what's the sense from people there about the need for a wall? >> reporter: well, hi, there, craig. a lot of attention on the state of the union here in south texas. the new portions of the wall set to be built in some parts of south texas later this month. here in roma, texas, local officials expect new portions of the wall to be built by this summer. right behind me is mexico. this is one of the parts of the texas border where there is no physical barrier save for the rio grande behind me. you can see there's a marking right there. that's where local officials say some contractors have been surveying this area for the wall construction. i want to bring in the

>> oh, i think one of the most recent displays of pelosi's power is obviously that the state of the unionening today and not on january 9th or january 29th when the president wanted it to happen. she was very adamant about this happening after the government was back open. but this is not only obviously pelosi's city but this is her district. this is really her community. this is where she gets her hair done, right here. she lives just a couple of blocks away. this is the famous neighborhood of san francisco. this is often where she brings her family to eat, rosa's cafe in the heart of her district. we can open up and show you where she often sits, which is right in the corner over there. we've been talking to residents, constituents here about the job they feel she's doing. they love that she's a bulwark between the president and the citizens of the united states. and obviously the president has spent a lot of time admonishing not only pelosi but the city of san francisco. he's said a lot about the quality of the city. and so whenever he speaks, they feel further entrenched behind her. t

steve: the state of our union coverage is great. union joint address before congress. brian: we can tell you this, he is expected to call on democrats to stop with the resistance. work with the administration and republican colleagues. that will go over well. especially on border security. ainsley: kevin corke is live at the white house looking ahead at the big night. kevin, what can we expect? >> big night indeed. here's what we should expect. the president will obviously celebrate the economy as he tells the american people, listen, we are in absolutely incredible time. at least economically for our country. we also suspect that he will talk a lot about international cooperation and most importantly political partnership and cooperation here in the nation's capital. you heard brian mention it, listen, amid the strong economy and incredible job growth we have to work on policy challenges like the crisis along the border, for example. but, that doesn't mean the president won't reach out specifically to encourage more bipartisan coope

looking at some really interesting numbers out of the state of the union that affects the presidentialpproval rating. the only president that really got significant bombs from their state of the union addresses, bill clinton. plus ten, plastics, plus four. no one is close. what do you think it is about bill clinton that he was so successful of these speeches? is anything donald trump can do to get a bump tonight? >> dana: i don't think the country was as polarized back then. i also think social media has a lot to do with it. juan could maybe fill us in. i don't know exactly what bill clinton was doing but as i recall, jesse, i think one of the reasons you might have seen that big bump is because remember he loses big time in 1994, and republicans take over. all of a sudden, what does he do? he triangulate and starts reaching across the island now he's working with newt gingrich and we have a balanced budget amendment. we have welfare reform. you see things most of the country was like, we want both of those things. he moves to the center i think that might be one of the reasons why, je
