shots were fired near the grounds of frostburg state university overnight. a student from d.c. was injured and a student from waldorf, maryland, was killed. >> reporter: by all accounts he was a standup student and athlete at thomas stone high school where he graduated just a couple of years ago. let's go to a picture of the victim. brandon carroll was shot in the stomach and killed this morning near frostburg state university where he was a sophomore and basketball player. police say it involved a dispute among students who did know each other. brandon lived in waldorf. we have video showing where he lived. no one was home at his house. his family did leave earlier presumably to go to frostburg. brandon graduated from thomas stone in 2008. we are told he was a standout basketball player and captain of the team. police did make an arrest, a 21-year-old student tyrone hall has been charged with murder. he is accused of shooting and wounding another student, a southwest d.c. resident. that student is expected to survive this attack. the university issued a statement today. it say

robert twilley is professor of oceanography and coastal sciences at louisiana state university. he's also a science advisor to the state's office of coastal protection and restoration. mr. twilley, tell us first a little bit more about the gulf coast-- gulf coastline, the terrain and the wildlife that's there, paint the picture for us. >> well, what are you hearing most about right now is off the coast of louisiana which is a delta. it's built by the mississippi river. it's basically a muddy coast. and it's dominated by wetlands. and it's a very fragile environment. as you move towards the east you get into mississippi, you get in the sea grasss, clear water. all along this area are some of the most productive shellfish, the oyster grounds in the u.s. then you move farther east and you get into more sandy environment, this is one of your hot beds of tourism, it's one of the most fabulous places to visit enjoy, and recognize ree ate. and then you move-- recognize reit. then farther into florida, again the same, more of a sandy environment. so you really have a very diverse set of

the shooting happened at an off campus party across the street from fosburg state university yesterday morning. police say tyrone hall shot and killed 20-year-old brandon carroll during a dispute. both are students at the university. carroll's friend of southeast d.c. was also shot and wounded. carroll grew up in waldorf and attended high school at thomas stow where his friends, family and former copes remembered the basketball captain last night. >> a good kid. going to school, doing the right thing. sad and tragic. >> brandon didn't have an evil bone if his body, and if you were mad at him, you couldn't stay mad at him long. >> police have arrested hall and he's being held without bond. officers recovered the shotgun that was allegedly used in the shootings. the second student who was wounded is expected to survive. >>> and family and friends are mourning the loss of a college student from our area killed over the weekend. 18-year-old joshua mcmackal of front royal, virginia, was shot and killed near texas southern university in houston early saturday morning. he was a freshman there
