. >>> in the south bay three people are dead following a shooting at san jose state university. this morning we want to find out who the victims are, why they were shot. christie smith is at the university. any answers this morning? >> reporter: well, those are all very good questions and we have calls in to a campus spokesperson this morning to try to get those answers for you. i can tell you that it's a very different scene from last night. right now very quiet, no students walking around. the shooting happened on the fifth floor of this parking garage behind me. as you said, three people dead. two victims plus the shooter dead as well. now, this happened as students attended evening classes about 8:40 at san jose state. this is a six-level garage that also houses a student services center. a campus spokesperson has not yet released much information about the motive or exactly who these people were, but they did not think that it was random. people reported hearing pops like fireworks. >> i was getting ready to go back to work. i was on my dinner break. i heard several pops. i

george state university campus. three people died. the investigation continues this morning.e want to check in with christie smith live on the campus with the very latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. well, the university spokesperson is supposed to update us this morning after 7:00 but i just got off the phone with san jose police and they confirm that they are assisting with a team of homicide detectives, but there are still a lot of questions this morning like were these students, the victims. now, the shooting, the gunfire happened here in the north garage on the fifth floor last night. we have new video and the garage is back open this morning, even the fifth floor. here's what we know. someone opened fire around 8:40 last night. evening classes were still in session. three people died. two victims and one person believed to be the shooter. police are saying they believe that this was not a drive-by and not a random shooting. officer jose garcia with san jose police just told me because there are three dead, the university called in for mutual aid, so

my main job has been doing social work for san francisco state university. i have been a community organizer, a social worker, but i have also been a legislative aide. i worked mostly for community- based organization supporting kids and families, working for labor. i got to see how city hall could be an effective tool to create change. i looked at running in 2007, 2008, and somehow i made it. i have been in politics for so many ways, doing work around central america, supporting people in central america against u.s. imperialism, their right to live, self determination. i did a lot of work on that on campus when i was in college. a bit of work on apartheid when i was in college as well. >> i never got involved in supporting a candidate. i never thought a candidate was someone that i would support. then when tom ammiano ran against willie brown, i got inspired. i thought, someone with integrity and honesty, if they can run for mayor, maybe i can be somebody who represents what is true about our people. that is what inspired me to run and be a candidate. one
