to virginians, they can't win. >> so what strikes me about that is traditionally you look at virginia as a state for democrats to win in virginia. the model we're all sort of used to, you've got to get the gun guys, got to be culturally conservative, show them you're tough on death penalty, tim kaine went through this whole thing in 2005. and the message of the mcauliffe campaign has really been, no, it's ken cuccinelli who's out of step, he's too conservative, especially on these cultural issues, and it seems to me that reflects more of a national tipping the point on cultural issues. >> i think there's that and i think virginia is an increasingly suburban state. and those rural areas are less important than they used to be. and i think ken cuccinelli has read as so culturally alien to those suburban areas around washington, d.c. that all mcauliffe had to do was be a warm body that those people didn't hate and he could win the election. and i think that's especially interesting, because cuccinelli isn't actually that much more conservative than bob mcdonnell, who won pretty soundly four years a

virginia picked a democratic governor at the same time that we have got a democratic president. the state has not done that in 36 years. ken cuccinelli and the republican party losing the virginia governorship last night just broke the mold, historically. and when you look at the data about who actually turned out in virginia, this is a much more worrying story for republicans in general than it is for just this one losing candidate in this one losing rate last night. republicans like to think they have sort of a structural advantage in a state like virginia because it votes for its officials in the off-off election like the one in 2009. when you vote in other years that means you get fewer people turning out to vote. and when fewer people turn out to vote, the electorate turns out to be republican, and that of course is good for republican candidates. so look at these numbers in virginia, the last time virginia elected a governor, it was 2009. this was the electorate that turned out that year. republicans, 37%, democrats, 33. so that was the off-year election, the last time they elected

remember, the president was slightly under water in the state of virginia. tly over water, 51% approve, 49% disapprove, but again, a pretty evenly divided electorate in this state. the president won big, remember, twice, the state of new jersey. the president's job performance. here's one more, a lot of people are going to be talking about tonight. chris christie says if i win big, that makes me a formidable republican presidential contender. we're asking people as they vote today in new jersey, if this were the lineup in 2016, hillary clinton, versus chris christie, how would they vote? chris christie can make the case he would run stronger than mitt romney. he would run stronger than john mccain against the democrat but you see hillary clinton with a slight edge at least in the early exit polling when voters in new jersey today are being asked even as we expect them to re-elect chris christie, clinton versus christie, close race but the democrat on top in a reliably blue state. >> fascinating numbers from new jersey and virginia. john, thanks very much. joh

one state, of course, republicans lost last night, the key swing state of virginia. ving along here. and terry mcauliffe's win is the glass half full story line for the democrats. they might sweep, that's a big deal. major swing state, all good. they turned out. the coalition that was the obama coalition to carry a swing state like virginia. the glass is half empty here. the democrats have to do some soul searching this morning. health care is a real issue. this is not going away. people that said health care was a important issue to them picked cuccinelli. people who said the economy was important to them picked cuccinelli in virginia. just a couple of yellow flags democrats should be worried about. couple more things. look at the president's approval rating in the state of new jersey. 51% approval rating. we know he had had an all-time low in the nbc/wall street journal poll. things not going so well for the white house. finally, i want to show you this. the republican brand problem is real. look at this. 2012, the brand i.d., the gap here, democrats 39-32. last nig

virginia. if you looked at the map, there was a lot of red in rural portions of the state. s in which terry mcauliffe won, the tidewater area, then there was the southeastern portion of virginia, and then, of course, up near arlington in northern virginia. why does the vote come down like that in virginia? it's actually a lot like the national map. there's a lot of red in rural america. >> yeah. >> what is it in the state of virginia that it breaks down like that? where is the disconnect in the message about some of the policies that the democrats are pushing forward for worker's in this country? >> well, if you changed the map of virginia to where the population centers are, the map would look quite different. the population centers in richmond, the tidewater area, and northern virginia voted heavily for terry mcauliffe, and that's enough to win the state, and there were other pockets of support as well. but i think the democrats have a cultural connection problem with a large swath of rural america, including in virginia, and that's something we've got to address. if we're

but that exists in virginia state law. would essentially become a court to hear the case and pass judgment and install a winner in that position by majority vote. and yeah, all or most of the statewide offices in virginia are going to be held by democrats starting in january, but the legislature in virginia is still really, really republican, and that's where the contest would be heard. out of 140 seats in the legislature, between the two bodies who would sit together for something like this, out of 140 seats, republicans hold 87 of the 140. they hold a big, clear majority in the virginia legislature. so, if the republican candidate who's thus far been losing this race, if he decides to contest the result, it is the republican majority in the state house that will decide his fate, that will pick the attorney general of the state. as plum crazy as this challenge system sounds, the leader of the fairfax county electoral board, which is by far the largest county in the state by population, he has been trying to raise the alarm
