demonstrators were arrested late wednesday in columbia, south carolina, after refusing to leave the statehouse grounds. officials say they were welcomed to return but can't stay overnight. the occupy movement also has a new face. tuesday night, seattle police used pepper spray to break up a protest after demonstrators defied orders to move. among those sprayed was 84-year-old dorley rainy. a photo of her leaving the scene was posted online and quickly went viral. in an interview, she called it, quote, a gruesome picture and said she is really not that bad looking. >>> a deadly storm system, including a dozen tornadoes, tore through the southeast late yesterday. the dangerous weather system stretched from the carolinas to the gulf coast. at least five people were killed. tornadoes were reported from north carolina to alabama. suspected twisters also did significant damage in north carolina, south of charlotte, where three people were killed. louisiana and mississippi were also hard hit. >> you heard wind and lightning. it just lit up the whole sky and then, all of a sudden, the wind burst throu

and win elections to have, um, ec quit bl -- equitable representation in the senate, house and statehouses. there aren't that many offices that requires that we need a million qualified women. i think we can find, say, 4,000, 4,5 o 0 quaffed women to run. the problem is with political parties and the unavailability of access to candidacies both through the incumbency effect -- if we have, um, as we do 83% of congress, um, consisting of men and most of those men are incumbents, it's going to be very, very difficult for new openings for new candidates whether or not those candidates are women. and so part of it has to do with political parties' willingness to persuade members of congress, seated members of congress to step down, willing to support women challenging incumbents within their own parties, willingness to recruit women for office. right now, um, the so-called big money people on the republican side are tryi

how the cuts will be implemented remains to be seen, but in statehouses and city halls everywhere, but officials see good reason to worry of the $6.7 billion operating capital budget, $270 million, more than 10%, come from federal grants. there will be cuts from a variety of programs including education and housing assistance. that will mean $150 million per year starting in the middle of 2013. >> speaking of other local governments, baltimore county receive $181 million in federal aid this year. $77 million of it is in direct aid to schools. >> more budget cuts tonight, and more heartbreaking impact. athlete at 8 sports programs at the university of maryland will have to find another place to play. it was called and day of enormous sadness. the school will no longer have teams in men's cross-country, indoor and outdoor track, men's diving and tennis, i can't -- acrobatic tumbling, and women's water polo. the cuts had to be made. they came up with -- they had to come up with a years of program costs by june 30. the tour across, $20 million. >> -- the total cost, $20 million. >> we cann

in iowa, a special election could have made the whole state go red, the republicans control the statehouse and one seat away from tying with the democrats in this senate. the republican governor, in an act of political genius appointed one democratic senator from a republican leaning district to a state board. thus persuading that democrat to resign from the senate and forcing tonight's election to replace her in cedar rapids. if the democrats win this one, they keep their one seat majority in the senate. if the republicans win, it's a tie and the republican governor gets to be the deciding vote. the first thing republicans would have done had they taken this over, probably voted immediately to repeal iowa's same sex marriage law. tonight, democrats have held on to their majority, associated senate calling the raze for democrat liz mathis against the republican, cindy golding. another race keeping our eye on, san francisco, ed lee has been interim mayor since gavin newsome left to become california's lieutenant-governor. and facing 15 different challengers in san francisco. if he elected t

bill: in the meantime, we're looking to statehouse battles in mississippi and also virginia. mississippi has gone republican for the first time now going back to reconstruction, it had to be in the 1870s, republicans looking to take 63 seats. we'll update that graphic a bit later. also in virginia, this thing is this close right now. late into the night last night republicans were trying to take over the virginia statehouse, and it looks like there might be a recount on the final vote of the night, it is that close. that would follow a pattern now we have seen in virginia going back over the past two presidential cycles, going back to 2004 on our touch screen, that's why we call it touch, historical, historical matchup between george bush and john kerry back in 2004. and the map red is republican, blue is democrat. george bush not much of a problem, and it has not been a problem for republicans going back to the early 1960s. he beat john kerry by a count of 54-46 back in 2004. now, in 2008 as the map changes you see what happened in virginia that year when barack obama for th

i'm joined now by karen kasler, statehouse bureau chief for ohio public radio and television. she's been covering the high profile ballot measure campaign from columbus, ohio. karen, it's good to see you again. first of all, remind us how this measure ended up on the ballot. >> well, this is the latest chapter in a story that started back in 2010 when republicans swept every office on the statewide ballot starting with john kasich as gern. and when governor kasich came into office he made it pretty clear that he was a little bit concerned about the power that the unions that represent state and local workers had in terms of bargaining and in terms of getting benefit packages and salaries. he and republicans then helped craft this bill, senate bill 5, which started to look a little bit at those collective bar gaping situations and also tried to expand a little bit more on that. that was 300-page bill that came into effect and so they tried to send the message that this was something that would help state and local governments contain costs at a time when the state was sending l

over the past few months we've been detailing for you how many republican-led statehouses across thes to voting rights laws that could affect many traditionally democratic voters to keep them from voting, but now the obama campaign is starting to push back. the fighting is going on now. the "wall street journal" reports that the obama can campaign has paired up with many state democratic parties and grass roots organizations to educate voters and challenge the new laws. ohio is the first state that the obama campaign has had luck pushing back. you can see that there by more than half for in-person voting and nearly half for absentee voting by mail? will the obama campaign's new counterstrategy work? we have joining us right now senator sherrod brown, the democratic senator from the state of ohio. also joining me right now is cynthia tucker in a minute. let me go to you, senator. tell me what's going on in ohio in terms of what the republicans were up to and what you've been able to do to stop them. >> first off, congratulations on your jfk book. that's exciting. heard you on the radi
