in staten island, 23 people died. that is more than 50% of the entire total population who died in new york city during hurricane sandy in october. this borough was devastated. staten island is used to being ignored because it's the smallest borough and it is not being ignored anymore. they're doing a great job of clearing this street so looks like they've had about 8 to 10 inches. the winds haven't been that heavy compared to connecticut, massachusetts and rhode island and a lot of people here who were anxious before this are breathing a sigh of relief. right here you can see there were many houses in this block that were destroyed. this was a house when hurricane sandy came through and no longer is. it is rubble. the house right next door was heavily damaged and people have been busily repairing it hoping to move in this week. it looks like they won't be able because they were afraid of the blizzard and hope to move in monday they were telling us. they've had a lot of tough times lately. they're very grateful at thi

staten island. let's begin in boston. logan airport measured one wind gust 76 miles per hour. that's two above hurricane strength. let's go to meteorologist and self-proclaimed weather geek, indra petersons, who has been in the snow for the better part of many hours already. are you frozen to your core yet? >> no, because you have no idea how many layers i have on. it would probably take me five minutes to list the amount of layers. i'm all good. better be safe than sorry. i want to show you how much snow we have. we're still seeing about nine inches. we're under the foot mark still. every time i walk out of the truck and i stand out here, i go, it's not that bad. then a couple seconds later, this huge gust comes by. we're talking 50, 60, 70-mile-per-hour gusts. logan airport is 2 miles away. we're pretty much standing right here, so picture those ice crystals smacking you in the face. i keep trying to han on to nigh anemometer. it measures the wind, and i'm like, okay, not a bisg deal, bu i'm getti

gary tuchman is live in staten island. how bad is it? hopefully not as bad as they were anticipating. >> reporter: well, there was a lot of anxiety, brooke. there's no question about it. it is certainly not as bad as connecticut as rhode island, massachusetts, new hampshire and maine. there's been a lot of snow and wind. when we started the day there was no snow on the ground whatsoever and they have gotten quite a bit. it is starting to let up. we have had precipitation now for the last 20 hours in staten island. about four hours were rain and that's why we don't have more snow than there could have been. behind me is a tent. the reason the stent here is that's where people who have been left homeless from hurricane candy three months ago have been going for meals each and every day. while this blizzard hit earlier today there are 1400 homeless people still in staten island that were having meals inside of this tent. a lot of people call staten island the forgotten borough. staten island has 475,000 people, 5% of the population. we sh s

we have to talk about new york, staten island specifically. no doubt that the warnings here about the weather, deja vu for a lot of you in the northeast. you just lived through superstorm sandy, pommelled the region, that was back in the end of october. and one of the hardest hit areas, staten island, new york, that's where mary snow is today. tell me how people are doing, how they're feeling today. >> reporter: brooke, the thing that people keep saying is here we go again. this is a punch in the gut, and the last thing people here needed. look around me. get a sense of how much work still needs to be done. if we can just pan over, right near us is a tent where volunteers provide meals every day to people here on staten island, in ts section that was so badly damaged. that's where we met steve chatty. he's displaced with his family. he says he comes here every day for his meals. he says he can't believe that he's still living this way and is in disbelief that another major storm is headed here. >> to be honest with you, becoming numb as far as

he has lived here, along the shores of staten island, for two decades, with his wife and four boys. back in 2011, camerada survived hurricane irene. so he paid close attention to reports of another potential hurricane headed his way in late october. >> it's been a very fickle storm, but it's going to be sucked in here, into the northeast somewhere. >> we were all hoping that the storm was going to blow more towards the south and not come north. >> a few miles away, at columbia university, climate scientist adam sobel was keeping an eye on sandy as well. >> at the beginning, look at that, that would be a big deal if that happened. but a week ahead of time, we don't take it that seriously. >> it is still four days away. this could have a bigger impact on new york city, connecticut, long island, new jersey, than irene did last year. >> as sandy moved north, it merged with a winter storm, creating a superstorm, double the size of a normal hurricane. >> the one part storm that was already on land was combining with the hurricane that was offshore. as they combined, it was almost one plus

staten islanders are waking up to at least a foot of snow. person, though, who did not wake up because he was up the whole night. sebastian, how worried were you last night? >> very worried. the whole family was worried. we thought the water was going to come back in again and another disaster ready to happen. >> you look out at least a foot of snow. >> snow is good. >> but you were very relieved? >> yes, very relieved no water came in. >> and talking to people around here, so overwhelmed, one man said yesterday, he was just numb, he couldn't handle anymore. how much of a setback is this? >> it's a lot. mentally frustrating. between, you know, for the whole family. you know, and you've got to work. my wife takes care of the crew that comes in. it's a lot of work. it's a lot of work. so you do become numb from all this. >> reporter: yeah, and it's certainly so overwhelming. thanks for taking the time to talk with us. but sebastian was saying, poppy, his first reaction when he woke up this morning was thank god because his worries were so high
