, but cabinet secretary is a rare visitor to staten island. how did secretary napolitano's trip today help on staten island? >> the secretary's trip was great for morale. i think the people out here were encouraged to know that the federal government is here now in full force to have a member of the cabinet here to kick it off and to show that fema is here and they'll be here as long as it takes to get staten islanders back on their feet. it was very encouraging to the neighbors and to the residents. but very encouraging to the elected officials out here. we've been working as a team out here, led by our borough president and many of the state elected officials and to have the secretary sit down with us and give us a briefing on what the federal government is going to do really, really helped us move forward today because when i spoke to you last night, lawrence, it was a different story. we, the day before, we hadn't heard from anyone. and to get this treatment today, and to see the number of fema employees here and the red cross and the nati

mccomb on staten island. issues now and trying to get the power back on and trying to get the transit system running and then after that, after the dust has settled, so to speak. you can look back and say, what do we have to do better the next time? you always learn you always try to do better, but i think at this poin, let's focus on the recovery. >> when you were governor, did you ever think the subways would be flooded like this? that the lights over lower manhattan would simply switch off for days? >> well, obviously, we had durable storms and we had the power blackout across the east coast and, of course, we had september 11th. so, certainly, you could anticipate the loss of power. and one of the things that is troubling to me is that it is taking quite some time to come back. i understand it is extraordinary times and i understand that sea walter does a lot more damage than rain water and it's understandable that it's taking this time, but, hopefully, the city will come back quickly and stronger. i just

brian, what are you seeing on staten island right now? >> reporter: well, wolf, at just about every house you go to in the section of staten island you hear horrific and pretty detailed stories of just how bad the storm was. here's the story of one man who took a few hits. if you can't imagine what it's like to suffer through a massive storm, listen to nick. >> the water was so high. it was up to this part of the door. i couldn't get into the door. i went around the side of the house. and i stood on a box that was floating. and i went through the window to get back in the house with my family. >> reporter: taking us through his house on staten island, the retired ups truck driver says he and his family scrambled to an upper floor away from water he was sure was going to keep rising. his wife and four sons survived. just about all of their first floor didn't. then just as nick and his family were recovering from the shell shock and flooding and trying to assess all of this damage, he took another body blow. he leads us to his side yard whe

on staten island, the scene of so much heartbreak, another wrenching story. ves churned by sandy overcame the home of george dresh in the island's tottenville section. the local newspaper, "the staten island advance" was given this photo of george a year ago. that's him on the far left with the white gloves. he had been helping to clean up after hurricane irene. this time, neighbors told the newspaper that he stayed because a family's home had been looted a year ago when irene had struck and this is what was left after the storm moved on. total destruction. he was killed and so was his 13-year-old daughter, seen here on her facebook page. angela was a middle school student with tons of friends. one of them created a facebook memorial page and one wrote, seeing this makes me sick. baby, please come home to us. just so sad. we'll be right back. in staten island, it wasn't going so well.ithin minutes of our coverage, a once pristine piece of real estate called staten island. that was then. all of a sudden, a different reaction at adam, how are things looking now? >> well, right now, you can't see much because there is dark. there is no elctricity and you talk about the pressure from the people of staten island to get government officials to listen to them. that pressure actually brought janet napolitano, secretary of national security, to the island today. here's what she said. >> we knew that staten island to a hard hit from hurricane sandy. so we want to make sure that the right resources are brought here as quickly as possible to help this community, which is so strong, recover more quickly. >> i can tell you that it's bitter cold. they have no electricity. one of the complaints is that all emphasis is on manhattan. i have a friend who's camped out in lower nhattan. they have no electricity in lower manhattan. con ed is making that emphasis to make electricity be r

there are gas stations, we should point out not all of staten island, 75% of staten island doesn't have any damage. the higher elevations it is such a cold, cloudy day and some places electricity has come back and other places they are still waiting. we did not see any lines at the stations. they had gas because we were trying to save our gas. gerri: a lot of people without gas worried about getting it. thank you for your help, stay put if you could. next i want to read a quote from michael bloomberg decided to cancel the marathon. cannot allow a controversy over an athletic event even one as meaningful as this to distract attention away from getting our city back on track. we want to turn now to david willey, you're right in the middle of this controversy. so many folks in the new york borough's like staten island which has been so hard hit, new jersey where they're still evacuating residents from hoboken, such a bad idea, sent the wrong message about priorities to have this event. how do you respond? >> all along i have deferred to the mayor's judgment and the city's decision to hold
