. >> reporter: the state's department of public health announced there have been four deaths in the bay area, two in san mateo county, one in san francisco, and one in sonoma county. the cdc says the number of flu- related deaths has almost doubled in recent weeks. it brings the total nationwide to 45 since the flu season began in the fall. >> we have seen an increase in flu cases. >> reporter: this doctor is the san francisco department of public health's director of emergency preparedness. she says handwashing and getting a flu shot are still the best lines of defense. but this year's flu vaccine is falling short of expectations. it's just 23% effective. that's well below what's average. >> it's normally about 50 to 60% effective. >> reporter: she says that's because this year's strain h3n2 has changed. >> that flu strain, um, shifted, um, and you um, that means a genetically shifted. >> reporter: even if it doesn't works the cdc and local doctors still say you're better off getting it than not. this person doesn't want to take chances. >> i'm trying to protect my family. >> reporter:

health officials say that all of these folks got sick after visiting the park between december 15 and december 20 which means they were likely exposed to somebody there. the state department of health confirms now 26 cases including 22 in california. four other cases tied to disneyland are also under investigation. of the 26 cases, though, four people were sent to the hospital. measles, of course is one of the most highly contagious diseases out there but we have a lot of questions about it. practicing cardiologist and assistant professor of medicine at the university of north carolina, it's worse than original thought, dr. campbell with a few more cases added in yesterday. do you think we know the total number as of yet of people infected? >> i don't think we do. it's so terribly contagious. when you have one person that's compacted with lots of people and have the disease you have the potential to expose 15 to 20 for every one person that has the disease. >> it's interesting when i think about disneyland i don't think about it as too confined. it's an amusement park. it's not like a concert hall or somewhere inside an airplane if you will. how exactly does the disease s
