let's take a look at these nbc/maris polls, the first two key states the first caucus state, iowa. and the first primary state, new hampshire. in new hampshire, donald trump has a solid lead. seven points over jeb bush. in iowa he's number one behind wisconsin governor scott walker. but still well into that top ten that we'll see on that debate stage in cleveland in a couple weeks. the other thing that we're watching is say nationwide policy. an in-poll that shows donald trump at 18%. he's the number one republican in that poll. what's interesting, that entire poll was taken after the comments he made questioning john mccain's military service and whether he was a war hero. he's gotten a lot of backlash from that. the other thing we're watching are the democrats. hillary clinton is leading the pack especially in iowa where he's gault a commanding lead. her lead is shrinking a little more. only 13 points in vermont over senator bernie sanders. that's in new england, vermont is right next door to new hampshire. by the way, she's going to be out talking about climate change in a few ho

my wife jane and i are so delighted to be in the great state of iowa with you tonight. i am also delighted to be here following other remarks from great democrats who have dedicated their lives to public service. i think them all -- tahhank them all. let me begin by suggesting something to you that i think very few candidates ever say. given the reality of economics and politics in america today, no president not the best, can bring about the changes we need in this country unless there is a political revolution. if you look at iowa iowa is a caucus state.in many states across this country. what i can tell you is it's all about organization and enthusiasm. people shouldn't discount bernie sanders in caucus states in particular because enthusiasm and organization trump all else. >> and that's iowa. how do you feel about mrs. clinton's response today? how did her response strike you? >> well i think she was being honest in a politically strategic way, as she often is. this is going to be more competitive than maybe some of her advisers thought six months ago ago, but this is an act of hillary clinton and her team setting expectations for her. she didn't want to go into caucus night or new hampshire primary night or south carolina primary night with these speck speck speck tagss that she would win in these contests by a 50-point margep. that's historically not very likely and probably wouldn't happen. i think what they're doing in part here is using what's become a semi sort of competitive primary to their advantage by lowering expectation

it's affecting her favorability rating when you have a 56% unfavorable rating in a state like iowa thats a pretty neutral state, my sense is that it shows an erosion and she just has has a few months anything to undo that. >> this certainly isn't where the clinton campaign would want to be, but they are in the thick of it in all these states. >> okay. two of our experts talking about the polls. the polls they are talking about quinnipiac out with new head-to-head polls. polled against a few republican, hillary clinton here you see the big picture here. clinton against jeb bush in colorado iowa, and virginia. these are swing states, obviously, purple states. clinton against governor walker clinton against marco rubio. there you see she is upside down in these three states. as you continue her poll her favorable is way down as you heard rawlins next in those three states. honest and trustworthy is not a good figure for hillary clinton in these three important states. the one thing she does have leadership qualities and there you see colorado, iowa and virginia turns around for the clinton
